Upgrading VSTs and keeping new presets separate

Hi

My first post here, so I am not sure if I’m posting in the right sub-forum.

I recently bought VC8 from someone, and although I have been tempted to upgrade to VCX (for 100 euros), I’ve decided not to. I have way too much stuff to go through, still, and I would barely notice the new stuff, because I’m not even properly acquainted with the old.

But I’m still wondering about something. Let’s say that I do upgrade some day, and I’ll get new instruments and presets in the newest VC version.

How will I keep the new presets separate, so I can go through them, without going through the old presets again?

I like to browse through factory presets from the top and see what I like. And if I like a specific preset I will “like” it (heart icon) for later. And the thought of getting additional presets that will just “drown” in the sea of already existing presets is a bit overwhelming to me, because I like to keep things separate.

I did my research, and it looks like if I upgrade to VCX (from VC8) today, there will be two reworked instruments: Mini V4 and Wurli V3.

Do those new instruments have new factory presets, as well?

And here is another confusion of mine. VCX also comes with 3 new expansion packs (sound banks, I assume?): Inward Universe, Inner City Soul and and Hyper Rave.

Could someone please explain to me how expansion packs work?

Are they just a bunch of new presets for different VSTs inside of VC?

And I’m assuming it’s possible to just filter them out using Analog Lab Pro or individual, corresponding VSTs?

Sorry about too many questions, at once. This topic got a bit longer than I expected

Hi @Aleque,

Yes we also like to keep things tidy in the community. This topic have been discussed some times before. Please search the forum first, if you need more informations than the following.

If Factory presets are updated for a version, then they’ll probably will be in a Bank of it’s own.

Yes Upgraded (new rebuild versions of) instruments can in cases like this not use older versions presets. The applications install alongside the old, when presets are not compatible.
You can in cases like this also not use the new applications presets in the old applications. Don’t uninstall old versions.

Soundbanks is installed separately.

In Analog Lab the presets can be set apart by instrument versions name. Unfortunately we still need a way to separate Analog Lab presets - only Multies can be separated. But the preset can be selected by instrument and then sorted so the presets from each version is together in the browser list in Analog Lab.

Hi LBH

Thanks for your reply. It’s not always easy to find answers to these specific questions, as different people have different ways of describing the same problem. And ChatGPT can be somewhat unreliable.

Are you saying: it depends?

Does that mean that duplicate presets can occur? Meaning, presets that have a same name for the old and the new instrument and sound the same or similar?

I’m not sure I understand. Can you please elaborate?

“Unfortunately we still need a way to separate Analog Lab presets” ← separate them how? Or from what?

“only Multies can be separated” ← I’m not sure what that means. By a “multi” do you mean when there are several VSTs combined into one preset?

“But the preset can be selected by instrument and then sorted so the presets from each version is together in the browser list in Analog Lab.” ← You totally lost me here…

I’m saying that Factory presets normally does’nt change in a instrument version.
Pigments that’s not in the V-Collection got new Factory banks in newer versions. Only the first time Factory presets was updated there was’nt any bank, but as far as i recall the presets could still be searched.
Pigments now have banks with version names.
But i can’t tell you about the future.

Duplicate preset names can occur. But that does’nt mean it will be the same preset or sound the same. But perhaps. I can’t rule that out.

Upgraded instruments like those you mention does’nt sound like the old instruments using the same settings. That’s also a reason why you can’t use the old presets in the new upgraded instruments.

A Multi in Analog Lab combine two presets/ sounds from the same or from two different instruments.

Please learn to use your Browser in the Analog Lab you already have. That will answer your questions.
Please read the manual section “3.2. Preset Browser” through to “3.2.2.4. Clearing Tags”.

In generel please search Analog Lab manual for answers and elaborations.
