Too Much Time on my Hands-Synth Intro

Hi:

I’m trying to recreate the intro to this Styx tune and was looking for advice. Does anyone know what was used, and if so have settings???

Thank You in advance,
Ron

Hi @rdamato ,

If we take the outro sound on that song into account, then the outro sound seems to use the CMI sample ALARM. the CMI was around in 1981. So my guess is both the intro and outro sound is created on a CMI. They both seem to use the Portamento feature for the glide effect. I can’t tell if the intro use a factory sample, but it’s possible. It can be multiple takes. Some studio processing is going on. I think it’s a constructed sound, so it’s not just about a few settings.

I think i would find another way to create a useful sound today. The Portamento or pitch glide also can be created with a envelope modulation on pitch or similar. An some modern effects can create an atmosphere.

I don’t think i will spend time to recreate the intro sound completely.
I attach a quick simulation i’ve created on the OP-Xa V here:
OP-Xa V_Bank_LBH STYX.obxax (32.9 KB)

Both the OB-X and OB-Xa was in production in 1981 and one or both was possible used by Styx. You can perhaps use the attached preset as it is or use it as a point to start to create the sound yourself. The preset can be imported. It’s in a bank named LBH STYX.
Use Modwheel to end the sound/ intro.

@LBH:

Thank You for your kindness. I have downloaded your sample and report back!

Best

You can change the length of the Pitch modulation in Function 1 in the Advanced view. The parameter Total Length.
