Multiple app opened at the same time

Hello sound creators ,
This not specific to AL, but wider to all of our SW instruments here.

How to deal with a DAW (eg Logic) and , let say, Pigment and Analog Lab opened at the same time, on the same machine ? I have only one keyboard (…), but would like it to only sends the note to one of them, not all at the same time… Otherwise is there any simple configuration for that, without tweaking each one bye one ? Very intuitively, the app with focus should get the note exclusively by default…
Thanks for any hint !

I can only speak for Logic as it’s my DAW of choice. By default, if you have several tracks with different plugins loaded, the selected track ie the one in focus, is the one that will respond to a MIDI keyboard.

Ah within Logic, yes… but my case is with Logic and other instruments running outside of Logic …

Do you mean hardware synth connected via MIDI?

You can change the send/receive MIDI channels for each external synth in Logic under the “Track Properties” drop down on the left and set the external hardware to the same settings. That way each can play seperately.

If I were you, I would read the following:

Good luck.

Sorry nothing specific to Logic, just forget it : imagine your run both Analog Lab and Pigments… I just need the active one to play the notes - without changing settings here and there endlessly or closing the apps…

You have confused me.

Are you playing both AL and Pigments standalone or as plugins in a DAW?

Let say first standalone, yes… but get all Midi notes and play them… I need only one to perform at a time. Same when adding Logic with the standalone app next to it, all get the notes…
First workaround I found is separating the midi channels: one for AL, one for Pigments and another one for Logic. This works fine with the standalone apps, but with Logic, I did not find the right setting for that yet. I ve set the midi channel in settings > MIDI > General > articulation switches to 2, but even the keylab send on ch 1, Logic gets it (even in Arturia mode on the kbd)… Still need to learn here …
Thanks !

I am not sure why you want to use plugins inside a DAW and standalone simultaneously. Is there a reason they cant all be in a DAW where you can assign different MIDI channels etc?

Maybe someone else here will have a better understanding of your methodology than I do and be able to help you.

@ALeX1

I have to say i’m a little confused here too.

Years back, before 64bit computing, we used to use something called ‘rewire’ to try and get around memory restrictions and a few other issues, to run a DAW and another app on the same machine, but there seems to be fewer and fewer reasons to do so these days.

If you could explain EXACTLY what you’re trying to achieve ultimately, and WHY, that might help us to understand better.

Hello @matjones,
Well I’m a beginner and discover it all now : my keyboard, the VST insts and Logic, thus I might not have appropriate habits or usage here…

What I mostly do is sound crafting in synths, Pigments, AL and Mini v4… So I often have 2 or more opened together (to experiment, compare sounds, etc …)… but I just would like to get the sound of one instruments when a play a note on my keyboard.
It’s the same as my PC kbd: when I press a letter key, only the active application (notepad) gets it, others (outlook, word, etc …) don’t… Is it such a weird use case ? :)) I naively expected this would be that simple…

Adding a DAW is another use case: same as above + Logic opened together. There are plenty of Instruments in Logic too and I d like to compare them with our Arturia synths. So here I play Pigment one side, Logic with another instrument in another side, separately, just to hear the difference and tune my presets for example…

@Funtmaster I might be inefficient here but before I got Logic (was testing Garage band and FL studio), I used to use my instruments apps standalone in a VST host (Live professor) to chain them with another VST , eg to a spectrum analyzer to get both visible at the same time (settings the synths and seeing the spectrum at the same time could not be done with Garage at least). That is one of the reasons I used the VST app(s) in standalone…

Thanks all !

HI again @ALeX1

Ah, i think i understand now mate.

BY FAR the best way of doing what you are trying to do would be to use a DAW and assign a different midi track to each instrument you wish to try/compare.
You should be able to switch between them very quickly with just a single mouse click by selecting which midi track/instrument you wish to play/hear.

So, depending on your DAW,

Say you wish to compare Pigments with ALV.

Open your DAW and set up a Midi track using Pigments and put it on the same Midi channel as your Midi controller.
Then set up a Midi track using ALV the same way.
I use Cubase and i’m assuming other DAWs work the same way here…

All you would need to do then to change between which instrument you are playing would be to select which midi channel the instrument you wish to play/hear is on… THAT’S IT! It’s no more complex than that my friend :sunglasses:
(That is if i understand you correctly).

In Cubase the user can set things so either both synths will receive the same Midi information at the same time by selecting both Midi tracks so they both have focus then.
Or just select one and it will focus on that one alone.

HTH!

Hi @ALeX1

@matjones is correct, you should not use the standalone versions, just use AL and Pigments, and other synths in your DAW (Logic) only.
In Logic all you have to do is load each instrument onto a different track. Then whichever track is selected will play only that instrument. You don’t need to change ANY MIDI settings at all.
And you can have all the instrument windows (GUI) open for all the instruments. Then just switch between them instantly to play with the keyboard.
Good luck.

Hello @matjones, @tobiasuk ,

Thank you for your hints here… So it seems my use case is uncommon and I should try getting used with in DAW edition rather than with the standalone versions.

But I’m still in the opinion (sorry I’m stubborn ) that using 2 or more standalone instruments should be as easy as clicking one or the other to get only the desired output as we simply type on our keyboards in notepad or word or mail… This could be a user option…

Anyway, understood current options, will manage this way. Thanks a lot for your time and support !
