Modwheel strange behavior

Hello everyone. First post here. Long time fan. Im hoping someone can help me figure out this odd problem i"ve been having lately. First, here’s my system info: Mac OS Seqouia. Ableton Live 12 Suite (latest build) Apollo X6 interface. Midi devices I have connected - Novation SL61 MK3 (mains powered), lujin 3 fader midi unit, streamdeck XL and a novation mini launchpad Mk3.

For awhile I thought my issues might be related to my novation keyboard but have since ruled that out…

the problem: in my Ableton Live set i have various midi tracks with VST’s . in this particular project mainly Arturia Collection V X. in session mode. oh and my Novation is INControl mode. i record a clip in one track and trigger playback then as soon as i jump to another track with say my DX7 or Jup 8 or Minifreak V the modwheel in plugin resets itself nomatter what the physical modwheel on my keyboard is doing so i have to jog my hardware modwheel to reset each and everytime I go to this track. for intstance i want the filter cut off in the mini5 to be fully open but when i go to another track and come back to the track with the miniV the filter is closed again because in the plugin, the modwheel has reset. This is happening to me in Gig performer as well with ARturia plugins. This is not happenign with any otther VST’s that I have. very confused.

I ruled out my novation keyboard by unplugging it and even when i mouse click out of the arturia midi track and back the same thing happens and visually i can see teh plugin GUI modwheel going back up it will not save its state? I also put Ableton midi monitor device on my Arturia midi track to see what midi messages are coming in. Sure enough (even with my Novation keyboard unplugged) as soon as i click back onto the midi track (with mouse) the midi montitor is showing a CC1 with a value around 59-64.

is this normal behavior? is there a setting I’m missing to keep the value of modwheel saved so i dont have to manually adjust my wheel have the plugin modwheel to 0 (applying no effect) everytime i click on the arturia midi track or want to record a clip its immediately applying either the filter cutoff or exaggerated vibrato which i do not want and its really interrupting my workflow.

Hello, in most of our instruments the mod wheel value resets if you don’t save its position, just like the 4 Macros in V-Collection. If you open the Brightness macro, then go to another preset and come back to it, the filter will be closed again.

What youre describing in the last paragraph sounds more like an automation that was recorded somewhere, forcing the mod wheel back down to 0 even after having opened it without saving the preset… can you retry on a completely blank DAW session?

thanks for the reply! I’ll give that a try. so to clarify, if in my ableton set. If i save the preset for each instrument (dX7/minifreak V) with the modwheel (in the GUI) fully down. it should save that way? I’ll also try opening a new session and test

Yes. If you save a preset with mod wheel up 100%, and you reload the preset with your physical modwheel down, you’ll have to nudge the mod wheel to make it jump back down to 0, and resave.

Again, it depends on the instrument. In Pigments the info is saved for instance. In others, I don’t think you can save this into the preset.
