CS80V (and other synths) that map CC7 or CC11 to master synth volume)

Recently I discovered that my foot controller (CC7 or CC11 - not in front of me right now) when conneccted to the CS80V was adjusting the master synth volume (know, right hand side of panel). This basically pushed the plugin into distortion territory.

I haven’t noticed this on other Arturia plug ins, and could certainly have changed something to make this happen.

Do I need to investigate the settings further to try to reset it to adjust a different “master” volume? Was this by design? Are other plug ins configured this way too?

TIA -

Pat

Hi @patazzmusic. Welcome to the community.

In generel in any instrument from any vendor or in any form you should never use a pedal to control the Master Volume directly unless the sound is programmed to not distort doing so, or the instrument somehow cant overdrive. Also you might have a pedal where you can set a range for the pedal or other ways to avoid to get a too high output.

You have tagged you have the CS-80 V3 and not the new V4.
The V3 unfortunately have a very bad volume leveling. You should set the Master Volume knob to a fixed level - (Unless the sounds other level parameters is set for you to be able to modulate the Master Volume some.) - Then you can use a Expression pedal midi CC#011 to control volume. If you enable the EXP button at the full left of the keys, then the expression pedal can be used. The sound will never exceed the level set by the Master Volume, but will be turned down from that level.
However - the expression pedal is also used in the modulation matrix, then that modulation also will take place. SOme level parameters can also be set in the Modulation matrix, if you wish.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further if needed.

BTW: I can recommed the CS-80 V4.

Thanks. I checked out V4 and it does’t have the CC7 assigned to the master volume. I’ll have to do some A/B testing between V3 and V4 as my patch customizations may have changed. Luckily I have a little time to get that done.

Yes midi CC7 has always been reserved for Master Volume in midi in generel. Just like midi CC11 always have been reserved for the Expression. But that’s not the main point in this. The main point is how to be able to use a pedal without overdriving the output to distortion.
So what i wrote above still apply. In CS-80 V4 i recommend to use to use midi CC11 and enable the EXP button left of the keys to control volume. But that’s up to you.

FYI: You can assign/ Midi Learn midi CC’s to parameters in the right panel of Arturias applications.
That include to for example assign midi CC7 to Master Volume, if you wish.

understood. My comment was actually more of a question in that I didn’t know whether the CS80V V3 had CC7 assigned to the master output or not. It’s rare that I ever assign CC7 or CC11 to master volume of anything, but when I do I make sure that I’ve got it limited (e.g., max value is 75 out of 127) to make sure it doesn’t happen.

If I did this to myself, I’ll just have to be far more careful in the future (only make the same mistake once whenever possible  ).
