Compositions Musicales

Well, this is just a draft,

the first final version under Cubase Artist which gave me a few scares, likely due to my ‘Brut de pommes’ (well, yes, for a Breton) way of hastily installing the plugins and not yet understanding how to replace or remove them for possible changes.

Well, it holds together; the next one will certainly be better (at least that’s what I hope).

See you later!

Hi Pascal,

in my opinion (imo), it’s an evolution. It’s less ambient, more structured, with a leitmotiv melody evolving. The leitmotiv melody is part of your style, your brand.
Here someone said Yaeh when it ended and not because it ended. This someone is like a parrot repeating melodies it likes.

Maybe I would try Bus peak if you have it to make it just a little bit louder (mastering final db preset).

Hello and thank you, Françoise,
for listening and for your insight into this piece.

To tell the truth, I only deserve credit for having found a Plungin and a sound that, as you so aptly defined, suits me.

This virtual piano is truly magical, but it will ultimately only be the foundation in times when inspiration is sorely lacking.

I don’t want to cheat on form and content; it must be the spark that propels me through a field of ideas.

So, right now, between my technical work to play real melodies at my fingertips and improve the structure of my compositions (thank you for your feedback), and mastering Cubase Artist.

I think today, thanks to the musicians I meet, albeit virtually, a musical vision is much more enlightened, much more perceptible, and with these words, thank you for your friendship.

I still need a little time, but the future will be even better.

See you soon Françoise, take care of yourself and those who love you.

Optimism is a rarity nowadays. L’effet thérapeutique de la musique.

On virtual piano, I once played drums when a drummer was missing in a music course. I still have a snare but I often use Addictive Drums with beats I modify. We’re often more musical conductors (chef d’orchestre) than performers (exécutants).

Hello everyone,

I haven’t been very active on the forum lately, mainly because I’m currently on hiatus from composing.

I’ll have to work extra hard to catch up with Françoise, who’s been sharing her musical world with us.

Well, I’m having trouble with my main computer running Windows 10 after an update crashed my 2TB hard drive.

I’m trying my best to use it for storage. Anyway, Windows 11 works on an incompatible machine, but I have quite a few things to reinstall.

On top of that, they just found a tumor on my right kidney, so it’s being removed in June. I’m staying positive, I have no choice.

I took advantage of a discount on Cubase 14 Pro, waiting for the release of version 15 and enjoying the grace period.

I’m now in the big leagues (but will the merit of better compositions be there? We’ll talk about that after my surgery).

My wife is giving me Samuel Adler’s “Study of Orchestration” for Christmas, translated into French—over 1000 pages of something to keep me up all night.

In case I’m not feeling my best, I wish you all a happy holiday season in advance. Musical regards.

Terrible news, Pascal!

Ok, I get it! I’ll shut up. :stuck_out_tongue:
No really, I hoped to foster more musical publications.

Thank you all for your kindness and encouragement.
It will be on December 4th because the protocol for my ankylosing spondylitis requires eight weeks before the procedure due to a weakened immune system.
Currently, I can’t take anti-inflammatories, but I’m being well cared for by my doctor and the surgeon, so I have good confidence.
For now, the waiting is the hardest part, but I’ll get through it.
Until then, I will take advantage of Cubase 15 for serious learning and, of course, my friendship is with you.
Have a good weekend everyone.

@francoise It’s always a pleasure to listen to your posts, and believe me, it motivates me to do the same to overcome my songwriting difficulties.
it’s a valuable challenge.
Thank you.

I was afraid you may not see the self-derision in my comment despite the emoji.
I have too much drums in my musical post; probably my Bavarian ompah side. :beers:

Hello @francoise , I didn’t say anything like that. You are kind enough to share what I hardly dare to do at the moment.
These are your compositions, and my listening is in total respect of your interpretation, the value of your experience, and your musical universe, even if my mind is not looking in the same direction, our paths cross at a moment.

Here is another profile I forgot on SoundCloud.

No, I’m always asking myself: should I publish this or that so I simply imagining what some users may think. It’s a presumption.

There are nice tools in Cubase particularly the Chord Pad allowing you to explore quite fancy chords and chord progressions. In Artist and Pro you have a note generator, unavailable in Elements. But I have one in the Amplebass “rifter”.

Cubase 15 also has the Omnivocals beta. But it’s probably a tool you may not use.

Bonsoir @francoise ,
As for the chord pad, I had it in Artist before switching to Pro.
But I’m old school; I prefer to work on harmony, consult books, chord dictionaries, and get a feel for the alchemy of sounds.
The problem, my main problem, is finding the framework for a musical story to tell. Since I’m more into instrumental music, developing lyrics for vocals isn’t my forte.
A style like Gainsbourg’s “L’Homme à la tête de choux” or “L’Histoire de Mélody Nelson,” of course, or progressive rock like Ange, certainly, but my weakness lies in improvisation, and my compositions remain shaky.
Too often, I lose myself in the narrative. It’s like with my poems: the source of inspiration never comes at the right time, it’s too fleeting for me to extract the essence, and it becomes unstable, inaudible, or messy.
Just like at school, my mind soars and crashes when I wake up at the last bell.
This is my musical karma and my vision.
Friendship.

Of course exploring harmony without “synthetic help” is much better. You can invent your own harmonic tones by moving around on the keyboard trying different notes.
As for improvisation, I know classically trained musician who can’t do it. The best thing is to do simple phrases with few notes that you repeat and permute.
Of course I know Gainsbourg but not Ange.

When it’s messy, let it rest for a day or two.

“my mind soars and crashes when I wake up at the last bell”
The trip is the point without using drugs.

Hello @francoise

“Ange,” like “Mona Lisa,” belongs to the progressive rock movement, as do many Anglo-Saxon groups. I listened less to “Triangle,” Atoll, Gong, Tai Phuong, and Pulsar, knowing them by name except for Atoll and Tai Phuong, of which I owned an album.

I turned to Genesis, Peter Gabriel, The Alan Parsons Project, Jethro Tull, Kansas, King Crimson, Asia, Barclay James Harvest, Electric Light Orchestra, Pink Floyd, Steve Hillage, Mike Oldfield, Yes, mainly, and of course, the unclassifiable Frank Zappa.

But also the Heavy Metal era, and not French singer-songwriters with lyrics like Bernard Lavilliers, François Baranger, Jean Guidoni, Serge Gainsbourg, Alain Bashung, and many others.
Have a good week, and stay warm if snow and cold arrive where you are; here it’s raining.

But also, I really like this album:
Marillion

Ange is typical rock progressif. I know Marillion by name. I missed the prog rock era.I was mostly listening to new wave.

In Quebec, we had Maneige https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzoYiT9yn1E

Metalwise, I liked Motorhead, Ministry, Kmfdm, Lacuna coil, and Rammstein (hugely popular in Québec city).

In the 90’s, I played on stage (Ensoniq EPS, in the background) with my two sons: Renaud on bass and Guillaume on my blue Fender Mustang. They played a rap tune, which was quite unusual then. They were big fans of Sonic Youth. Guillaume died of a brain tumor while doing his PhD in computer science at l’École polytechnique de Lausanne.
