Just got a KeyStep 37! As it seems to be the best keyboard for use with mini-synths like Volca and Aira Compact.
Just started experimenting with it, but was finding it very hard to play due to the touch sensitivity (when connected to my Roland Aira Compact J-6 Chord). Would need to play the keys pretty hard for all the notes to have the same sound/volume.
Tried looking in the user manual, tried doing some Googling, haven’t found a way to actually turn if off. So how can it actually be turned off?
You can change the velocity curve in the MIDI Control Center Device Settings tab. This might make it easier to play more consistently, but I don’t think there’s a way to completely disable velocity sensitivity and always use a fixed value when playing the keys (there is for the sequencer).
I had a look at the J-6 manual to see if you could disable receiving velocity on that end, but I couldn’t find anything.
If you can’t find a velocity curve that works for you, another option is to use something like the RK-002 that can be programmed to send fixed velocity
Seems absurd if there’s no way to toggle it it on/off. Would think reviewers would point out this glaring flaw as it’s a pretty basic (and arguably must-have) feature. Would have looked for a different option if I’d known it was lacking and velocity was permanently switched to on.
You can set the keyboard velocity on the J-6, which might be a way to effectively turn it on/off on the unit. But I’m guessing the KeyStep 37 might override whatever velocity settings the J-6 has with its own curve?
I’m guessing (and hoping) that changing the velocity curve in the MIDI Control Center will store it on the actual unit? Or will you always need to plug it into a PC to have it change to the curve you’ve selected?
The cable is interesting! Would prefer finding a solution that doesn’t involve spending a lot of extra money, or a lot of extra time trying to figure out MIDI and programming. But good to know it’s an option!
