Stereo audio input, what's the point?

can someone explain to me what the point of stereo audio inputs are on this device? I understand you need audio input for the vocoder but is there any other purpose here? I purchased this assuming the inputs were for stacking a second synth on top but apparently astrolab does not have this ability?

Other than the Vocoder, some other instruments in V-Collection/Analog Lab/AstroLab have an audio input that can be used in the synth:

  • ARP 2600 V3
  • Buchla Easel V
  • KORG MS-20 V
  • Mini V3
  • Pigments
In particular, Pigments has stereo audio input (in the Utility Engine) that goes to the filters and FX.
Arturia has provided a template preset that uses this feature here: Audio In Pigments
Using such a preset as one Part of a Multi in AstroLab provides a processed audio in, mixed with the other AstroLab part.

So let me see if I have this correct. If I add an external sound source, (in my case a finger drum pad) to my AstroLab, I’ll need to “assign” this to a preset to actually get the sound to be processed and sent to the balanced line outputs.

Do I have to use one of the special presets (audio in pigments) that allow this to happen?

Stuart.

Yes, that’s the way it works at the moment.
So, if you want to combine the audio from your external device with sound from an AstroLab preset on the AstroLab’s output, you have to create a Multi Preset, with an “Audio In” preset on one Part, and a single AstroLab preset on the other Part.

Thanks, that’s not a problem. I’ll just just the template that you posted here a while ago. Thanks!

We’ll I tried this and so far nothing from the audio inputs is coming into that Audio Input preset.

I’m using a multi with the audio input template as Part 1 and a B3 as part 2. The B3 works fine but no audio from Part 1.

Is there anything else I have to do? I’ve verified the input gain on the Astrolab is set to maximum as is my input source. I’ve also verified that there is a good signal level going into the connectors on the back of the Astrolab.

*** UPDATE ***

Ok, well I’ve figured it out and the news isn’t good. The audio input template works ok EXCEPT that you have to press a key(s) on the keyboard before any audio comes through from the inputs. Totally useless.

I’m opening a case to support on this. How they could have shipped a “STAGE” keyboard with this limitation is troubling.

Hi @stuart.renes ,

I have also posted this in your other topic.

It’s normal to have to activate keys. Gates have to be opened before your hear any sound.

Some of the audio in presets might not need to press a key. Like the Korg MS-20 V presets Guitar Synthesizer l and ll perhaps - if those are available in Astrolab.

Pigments presets and most synths in generel only have gates open when a key is activated somehow.

If the gate is open all the time, then you hear sound all the time.
Some synths can be programmed so the gate is open all the time. But mostly pitch need to be added.
Activated key can be held.
Some synth can have possibilities to convert incoming audio to pitch. But perhaps not always perfect.

Pressing keys also add pitch to the sound.
