Is there a sax solo preset in Astrolab? I cannot find one. Thanks.

Hi @Kari,

I don’t know which sounds come with Astrolab. Have you done a browser search?

There are instruments that have sax samples in V-Collection. So it’s possible to create sax presets, if you own the full applications. I suggest you download demo versions first. For example the CMI V, Emulator V, Mellotron V and Synclavier V to find out if that’s what you are looking for.
Sax is not easy to get to sound right.

Perhaps there are soundpacks with a Sax preset you can use. I can’t tell.

Much depend on how excact and detailed sax you are looking for.
You do mention Solo Sax. Are you looking for an excact sampled Sax with many articulations?

I don’t have license for V Collection- I have whar comes with Astrolab. I am looking for a sax preset to do solos live in an R & B / rock band. Thanks.

You are right LBH.
I have AL and bought many banks. And the Augmented bundle.
I master Alto and Tenor sax and would not be satisfied with any AL preset.
CMI Saxsoon preset vaguely imitates a bariton sax.
Augmented brass or woodwind are cinematic and do not have a sax preset.

Native Instruments Session Horn Pro has tenor, alto, bariton solo instruments that can do the job though they can’t compare to the real thing.
Swam sax (physical modeling) are ok (just ok) for “smooth jazz”/lounge.

Nice post @francoise. Thanks for the input.

There are also some multisample library instruments out there that can sound allmost like a Sax if one can handle it.

I would not use Arturias current instruments unless a simple Sax sounds that wont get the right feel is enough.
I think some real power of using synthesis is it can create it’s own sounds. I think i would do that with Arturias current instruments.

Yamaha once had the VL1 using Physical modeling that i would like Arturia to emulate for the V-Collection. Here is a Sax from that:

Here is another example at 3:37:

Here at 1:36:

If someone is interested here is some original VL1 Demo songs:

The VL1 t has it’s own character. It’s not real but synths like. And still it can sound much like a real acoustic instrument.

I don’t think, i can help further @Kari.

Well thanks for your help. I hope Arturo’s adds a sampled sax or emulates the VL 1, which would work for me.

You were right when you wrote “Much depend on how excact and detailed sax you are looking for.”

Yamaha VL1? Yes, now I remember I had a SW1000XG card and a PLG150-VL that would piggy back on the SW1000.
The PLG150-VL was ok, depending on what you were looking for.
See Youtube “YAMAHA PLG150-VL VIRTUAL ACOUSTIC EXPANSION”
The flute was better than the trumpet if I remember well.

The first video is quite good. He’s playing with a Breath controller.

Arturia chose to model synths instead of traditional instruments and they do it well. Moddart (Pianoteq) chose to model acoustic and electric pianos (and harp). They added classical guitar but they don’t do brass and woodwind.

I presume Arturia could do a multilayered sampled sax on CMI, Emu or Pigments but it’s a lot of work and they would compete with Native (Session Horns Pro).
