I have been using synths since I was a teenager in the 70’s. My first was a Korg MS20/SQ10 setup.
Fast forward past a marriage and kids and my mid life crisis resulted in probably over 40-50 synths bought and sold. Some stayed longer than others. Now, I am s/w based, primarily Arturia with some Korg, Cherry Audio and a few others. My go to synth is Pigments. It has always interested me how people gravitate to one synth or another. After all, people have have said to me: “dont they all just do the same thing and sound the same?”. Often it’s hard to explain why one synth works you while another doesnt. Sometimes it’s obvious - like the MS20 filter.
So, I thought I would start a thread concentrating on s/w synths, primarily non-Arturia and try to unpack some of the reasons I use them. In the process, maybe Arturia will sneak a peek at the thread Please feel free to chip in.
ANA 2.0 (V2.5) - Sonic Academy.
There is a lot I like about this synth. It has many of the features and share an architecture with Pigments. I dont use it as much as I should but three things attract me to it: Wavetable Pulse Width, Wavetable Sync and some of the more esoteric Filter Types, which all contribute to its characteristic sound.
Mercury 6 - Cherry Audio.
I think I prefer this over the Jupiter 8. As with many synths of this era (and the Roland Juno series 6,60 and 106) are amongst my favourites, its logical layout and simplicity lead to unencumbered patch creation. I dont mean this in a negative way but you dont have to think too hard about what you are doing.
Hello @Funtmaster,
is this a topic just about synthesizers and keyboards or software.
I owned a Korg MS20 that I really didn’t know how to use (a purchase from a friend more out of curiosity and ease of payment) but especially a DX7 .
Between the first generation drum machines and a double keyboard organ I was more of a guitarist than I am today.
I can talk about Dimension Pro, Rapture LE, z3ta, Beatscape from Sonar8 Cakewalk, SynthMaster one, 2 and 3, Halion sonic, Sektor, those from FL studio (I have some from Cherry audio).
A topic that will be very interesting in my opinion.
Musical Friendship.
Dimension Pro 64 has a powerful engine for sample reproduction and combined with synthesis functions. It includes a complete library relating to the instruments used during this period. The user can add other sounds under various extensions.
I’m not sure what this topic is about.
Will you tell Arturia something?
Why is Arturia synth not allowed?
Can you be more clear about how to understand this topic please?
I’m thinking that so many apparantly wan’t every new synth to sound and do the same in the same way as another synth.
I for example like synths are best in it’s own timbres, and not so much in timbres other synths can do just as well, if there is a choice to be made.
Guilty. It is under the “other gears” tag as I am interested in what people use and why. Both hardware and sorftware are included. In the process Arturia may gain some insight into its customers minds. It’s a sort of freewheeling focus group of you like
I agree that no one synth can do everything you want but often does that one thing perfectly. For me, Pigments is the closest I have come to the perfect synth
Hello @Funtmaster
it is very interesting to know the analog and digital instruments used in addition to those proposed by Arturia.
To tell the truth if some keyboards have been forgotten or unknown maybe we will have the pleasure of discovering them and making them reable by the programmers.
Thank you for this window on instruments still unknown to me.
