a few days ago I got my new Polybrute 12 - and I really love the synth. But I noticed something strange and would like to know if anyone else has experienced this, too.
Some patches are rather noisy. For example, patch 1.A3 “Before Creation” has the noise floor at around -74db. You can hear the noise using headphones and turning the headphone volume to full.
Patch 1.A1 “The Opening”, on the other hand, has nearly no noticeable noise - around -82db.
Even the init patch has more noticeable noise.
Is this a normal behaviour of the analog circuits? And why is there such a difference in the patches?
1.A1 has the Preset Volume set to 3 which keeps the noise floor low.
1.A3 has the Preset Volume set to 8, which pushes the noise floor upwards. It also uses the
Phaser modulation effect which takes hold of the noise, as phasers do, to make its swirling magic.
The Init patch has the Preset Volume set to 8, which pushes the noise floor upwards.
So yes, this is all normal and dependent on the sound design.
Damn, you are totally right. I missed the preset volume!! I searched the last hour for the single setting that explains the difference in noise level between the patches … thank you!
Are there any values regarding the Preset Volumes 1-8? Like is 4 the default, and 5-8 is adding gain? Or is 8 the default, and all the other ones below are trimming down?
There’s no default as such, apart from the Init patch value being 8.
I suppose that technically a higher output is always preferable for the best S/N ratio, but for practical reasons one may prefer similar volumes for all patches, and then maybe harmonized with the factory patches.
