Hey guys! I am trying to hook up my microfreak to my TASCAM model 12 and have it play on both the left and right speakers, instead of just one. I know the MF is mono. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks in advance!
I’m not familiar with that particular mixer, but if it works the same way as most others, then all you should need to do is use a mono channel on which the pan pot is set to central position.
HTH!
Are regular TS cables ok or do I need TRS?
If the output of the UFreak is mono, then just use T/S cables, unless of course you’re using a synth with TRS/Balanced outputs. Just keep the length as short as possible if using TS cables.
If you were to use a DI box, then you would use a T/S cable to the DI box and a balanced XLR mic cable to a mic input on the mixer.
Try it out with just a T/S cable first, if that’s too noisy then try a shorter one, if it’s still noisy, then you might want to have a look at going via the DI Box route.
I do both here, depending on how little or how much noise there is in a signal, sometimes USB can put noise out, so i’ll use DIN Midi instead… Use your meters and ears.

Thanks guys! I’ll give it a shot!
“If the output of the UFreak is mono, then just use T/S cables, unless of course you’re using a synth with TRS/Balanced outputs.”
The output of the MF is balanced mono. I would strongly recommend TRS, because with TS you lose some signal volume. Of course, this only makes sense if the LINE input of the mixer is balanced as well. Otherwise, you could use a TRS-to-XLR cable adapter and use the MIC input and attenuate the input (most mixers do have a -x dB switch at the inputs. Don’t know about the Tascam, though.)
“If you were to use a DI box, then you would use a T/S cable to the DI box and a balanced XLR mic cable to a mic input on the mixer.”
No need for a DI box, the output is already balanced (see page 12 of the manual v5)
Cheers,
Alex
Both the main out of the MicroFreak and the line inputs on the Model 12 are balanced 1/4” TRS jacks. The best connection is a 1/4” TRS cable from the MicroFreak main output to one of the mono channels 1–6, with the INST switch off.
A TS cable should also work, but might have lower signal and higher noise, as others have pointed out.
Don’t try to connect the headphone out on the MicroFreak to the mixer, as this is a stereo (dual mono) TRRS connector (with mic input on the third channel).
I think I understood your query.
I own both. When I run a micro freak through the model 12 mixer, I use only one mono input from the synth to the mixer input jack and set the balance at the bottom (above the fader) to be in the centre pan which will play on the master left and right channels. If Im not mistaken, basic mixers allow you to use a mono channel and pan it right, centre or left to the Master or Sub outputs, otherwise microphones would only come through on one ear.
You would only need to make the micro freak stereo if you are running it through an audio processor with a stereo output. An example is when I plug mine into a Boss CE-2W chorus pedal with a mono input and stereo output. Then you would plug that into the model 12 into two separate jacks and pan them hard left and hard right separately.
Another trick you can explore with is using the separate insert jack on inputs 1 or 2. With the correct Y splitter cable you can plug your synth into the input and run the y splitter to outboard effects (per channel) directly into the mixer. There is a guy on Youtube who does very detailed videos on the model 12. The channel is RecordingStudio9.
Best of luck
Thanks guys!
