KeyLab 61 mk3 Owners

Hello folks.

Quick questions, how does you guys keybed look, specifically the white keys? Mines is definitely not perfect, some are slightly higher/lower and a couple keys are even a bit crooked. Wondering if your guys’ keybed is also kinda/slightly janky or did I just get a crappy unit…

Bonjour,

When I got my old and trusty Analog Lab it was that way too. Over time, as I have used it, they seemed to have ‘settled’, if that’s the right term for it. The response is the same as it ever was, but the slight variations (we’re talking millimeters here) seem to be gone.

Funny enough, I was just thinking about this when I saw the new Keylabs. That aside, how do they feel??

Cheers

I really like the feel. To me, it feels like a real synth. However, I’m noticing slight inconsistencies with the keys themselves. Not super noticeable but if you’re really testing each and every key, you will feel it. But the first one I bought (and the one I currently have), the C3 key is noticeably stiffer than the rest and I’m currently in the process of an exchange. I bought another just to compare them both with the intent to return the crappier one and the newer one would wobble on the table lol but all the keys felt good this time and nothing finicky, I still exchanged it for a newer one cause there was no way I’m dealing with that wobble, especially since it’s on my desk and not on a stand. So definitely some quality control issues with these guys but of all the controllers in this price range (and because I have the V Collection), the keybed on these are the ones I like the most so I’m willing to bite the bullet until I get the right one.

I miss those days of walking into a store to check them out first. It’s always a gamble, isn’t it? A keylab is in my future for sure, as I too just upgraded my V Collection.

Me too. But the stores (at least round my area) didn’t react fast enough to market changes. 2010 onwards, still trying to sell cheap arranger-keyboards by Korg and Yamaha while most people not looking for a Korg Kronos or a Yamaha Genos (etc) really wanted to try out midi-controllers because this was the exploding era of the bedroom-producer.

Years later, even in the few music stores that still exist, it remains difficult to find anywhere with a setup where you can hands-on demo a selection of midi-controllers. And when I say ‘remains difficult’, I can’t name any.

Same here, there is a bunch of used MIDI controllers at 1 Guitar Center here but getting a feel on a used keybed is not so promising, or on the flip side, it could in fact serve as a reminder of how it will feel later on down the line lol. Who knows…

From now on, I’m buying it, opening it up at the store and if I don’t like it, return it right then and there. We have every right to.
