Hi. I’ve been very luckily gifted a rather old Keylab 88 (first generation). All keys play OK but three or four of them are rattling rather badly. Are there any repair centres (or capable individuals) in the UK? More to the point, is it viable to repair a keybed on these older keyboards? Is this something an inexperienced person could attempt themselves? The rattling isn’t a showstopper, but it’s something I would like to address. The fact that the keyboard was free means I don’t mind spending a bit of cash on getting it looked at. The 88 key Mk I Keylabs listed on Marketplace are up for £300 or more. I have a Mk II 49 key and a Mk III 61 key Essential, but if I could get this up to speed I would probably sell the Essential, possibly both. Thanks for any suggestions.
HI @bigblip
Lucky you! ![]()
I’m assuming you’ve checked all data connections are performing as they should be too? Arturia stuff is generally rock solid, at least the ones i’ve had, so it should be ok but i’d still check if not already.
There are quite a few little, independent guys up and down The UK you’ll be pleased to hear!
If you have’n’t already, i’d check for videos to see if there’s anything on disassembly if you feel confident enough. Just remember to photograph everything as you go along, it’s always a worry when you have ‘spare parts left’ after doing something like this ![]()

They’re generally pretty straightforward, but you do have to take time and care.
If you know any other local musicians, particularly guitarists i find, it’s worth asking them if they ‘have a guy’ as most of us do.
There are quite a few retired engineers who do this kind of thing as a hobby i’ve found.
Whereabouts in The UK are you?
Bear in mind though that they might want some £££’s, so you’ll have to weigh up if it’s worth it for you.
HTH!
EDIT:
This is my own personal experience and in no way anything to do with Arturia…
I’ve changed batteries and the occasional 1/4" jack socket on a few synths over the years, my old M1 was hard work as there were so many ‘fold out’ and rather large curcuit boards with various ribbon cables that had to be dealt with before i could get to the battery, but midi controllers are much simpler as there’s no synth boards etc in there, mainly keybed and fresh air!
Read into that what you will… ![]()
Thanks @matjones, I appreciate the advice! I’m in the north of Hampshire, in a small town called Yateley.
Re “checked all data connections are performing”. Yeah, all working fine from what I can tell. All knobs, faders, buttons and keys appear to be doing what they should.
I’m leaning into attempting the repair myself and I have found a few YT videos that give some insight. Opening the beast up is a bit of a challenge in itself I think! From what I have read or watched, it seems that the most likely issue is the felt/foam that the hammers strike has worn out in places and needs replacing. I’ll do a bit more research to try and establish what I need to replace it with. 100% agree with the photographing every step!
If I do find a localish hobbyist I don’t mind spending some money on getting it sorted. I hadn’t planned on buying one of these, but now I’ve got it I really do like the weighted keys - it will be hard to go back to the Essential - maybe even the MKii!
Thanks again for the advice.
HI again @bigblip
Ah, that’s a bit out of the way for my repair guy i’m afraid.
If you’re even half confident with a soldering iron, not that you’re likely to need one for this, you should be ok if you just take your time, think it through etc…
On a personal note, nice one mate! i’m all for keeping things out of landfill and try to pass things on rather than sell or dump them.
Please do keep us updated as it might be useful for others at some point too.

No worries, but thanks anyway! Yeah, the previous owner is moving house and I think his plan was to dump it, which would have been a real shame. I was in the right place at the right time!
I’ll certainly report back. It’s not high on my todo list (as it was an unexpected windfall in the first place, and I’m a bit swamped at the moment) but as soon as there is any progress I’ll let the group know.
All the best!
