I have wanted to get into the world of MPE for some time. I saw the CME X-Key37 discounted and bought it. It only supports poly aftertouch as far as MPE goes and not slide but it was enough for now. It works perfectly in Pigments when MPE is enabled and I can verify the MPE aspects by assigning AT to an LFO modulating Filter Cutoff and different amounts are applied according to aftertouch on a per key basis.
Great.
I saw that a lot of Arturia synths support MPE and tried Jun 6V but it doesnt seem to allow aftertouch in MPE mode. It does with MPE switched off but using one value for all keys as expected. I set it up via the Advanced panel - assigning aftertouch to Filter Cutoff.
I tried the same with Augmented Brass and got the same result.
EDIT: The crazy thing is, with Prophet 5V, MPE AT seems to work fine ONLY when MPE is not enabled.
Any MPE gurus out there?
I tried Jun-6 V in Ableton with MPE enabled (in Ableton and Jun-6 V Settings), using Push 3 as controller, and it seems to work fine. Pitch, Slide, and Pressure all register and Jun-6 uses them as expected.
EDIT: If you’re using standalone app, I see what you mean. I’m seeing the same as you, using MicroFreak as controller.
EDIT 2: I think it’s probably because XKey37 and Microfreak are not MPE-capable. They have Polyphonic Aftertouch, which is not the same. The Polyphonic Aftertouch part seems to work as intended when MPE is turned off.
Thanks for taking the time to look into this and reply.
I suspect I am the author of my own confusion. I knew the X-Key was not a fully fledged MPE controller but I thought I had to enable MPE to take advantage of its Polyphonic AT capabilities. That seems incorrect as Poly AT works without MPE engaged.
One day I will be able to afford a fully fledged MPE controller but for now, the X-Key suits my needs and will expand the sounds I can create - especially in my go to synth - Pigments.
Thanks for your help.
