So I ran into a serious problem. I have 2 ADAT devices. MCHStreamer, for working with an iPad (USB sound card with only ADAT channels), and an Expert Sleepres ES-3-6-7 kit, ADAT DAC/ADC for eurorack. When they are all connected together, the last connected ADC emits periodic “glitch explosions” with all channels.
When I turn off one of the ADCs, everything goes back to normal. This really messes up the entire planned workflow. How can this be fixed?
It is possible to use all ADAT channels (2x 8 inputs + 2x 8 outputs), but the digital clock of all devices must be synchronized, in particular devices connected to an ADAT input of the AF16Rig.
The glitches you are mentioning sound like at least one of the devices’s clock is not sync’ed, or there is a clock loop somewhere in your setup.
Since neither the MCHStreamer nor ES-3/6/7 have a dedicated wordclock input, they both have to get their clock from their ADAT Input (both set to sync to ADAT In).
That means that the AF16Rig has to be the master clock (set to Internal), sending clock to both devices via the AF’s ADAT outputs.
If both devices are behaving correctly, then the ADAT signal that they return to the AF16Rig should be in sync.
But if one of the devices is not getting its clock from its ADAT Input (or is not sync’ing its output to the incoming ADAT clock), there will be glitches.
So, check your ADAT connections and clock settings.
Out of curiosity, have you tried swapping which device is connected to ADAT In/Out 1-8, and which is connected to ADAT In/Out 9-16?
If so, does that change anything?
I think I’ve found the problem. It turns out that MCHStreamer does not remember the clock setup after disconnection. And there is no way to change it on the iPad. I need to write to the devs, maybe they can fix the situation somehow. Thank you for you quickly reaction)
Sean, thanks for the answers. I have another question about my workflow. Does the Audiofuse rev1 remember the setup of clock? Will it be able to fully work with iOS using all its ADAT channels and be in slave clock mode? I’m thinking of purchasing a supported one for my purposes.
Sorry, I don’t have an original AudioFuse, I have the 16Rig and Studio.
The AudioFuse Studio does remember its clock setup, but I can’t speak for the Rev1/Rev2.
From what I can see, the Rev1/Rev2 works with iOS, and can be slave-clocked from the ADAT in or from the SPDIF/WordClock input, but that’s only set up within the AF Control Center (no clock selection on the front panel). So, I guess it remembers the AFCC settings after it’s been disconnected, but I’m not 100% sure.
How you would want to combine it with the 16Rig, or if it’s for something different, only with the iPad?
I’m still at war with my idea of putting all together (8 ins/outs from iPad, 8 ins/outs from ES-3/6/7. I sell the MCHStreamer nad om the advice of one guy, I bought a used Audiofuse Rev1. And now I realize that I maybe made a big mistake. Because even here there are problems with the clock that I don’t understand. If I set an external ADAT clock on the Audiofuse and internal on 16Rig, then after a few seconds the incoming signal (from input 1 of Audiofuse) starts clicking. It seems as if the clocks diverge over time. I have already changed the connection order, reset the sound cards, etc. It happens that I make settings on the mac, and everything seems to be working well. But as soon as I switch to an iPad, the problems start. Those clicks and stuff. I don’t know what to do anymore. It seems like two cards of the same line, the same manufacturer, but why can’t they work together?
Today I’ll try to use word clock by bnc / rca, but I’m afraid, that this option blocks main digital channels.
it doesn’t work… I think, that Audiofuse doesn’t remember the settings made on the AFCC, or it works very poorly with ADAT clock. I didn’t have any problems when I tried out babyface pro. I shouldn’t have saved money and take Audiofuse.
Sorry to hear this. As I said above, I wasn’t sure about the AudioFuse original/Rev2.
Maybe you should contact Arturia Support and ask them directly if there’s a way for it to remember the AFCC settings.
The AF Studio I use works well with ADAT Clock, as well as the AF16Rig.
If it’s working with the Mac, I suspect it might be something with the iPad.
Does the App you are using on iPad to get the 8in/8out have clock settings options?
