I would like to use the Jup8 mod sequencer to trigger rhythms while I play a chord

Been using the Arturia synths for a while, but finally digging in deep now and need some help from the forum.

I’m trying to recreate a gated trigger sound on the Jup8V v4. 40 years ago I would have played a pad and used a separate rhythm track from a drum machine, patching the output of the drum machine into the audio in of the synth, or use a noise gate on the output of the audio tracks to do so.

I want to be able to hold the chord, and have the rhythm play the pattern using the mod sequencer. Think New Order (or any other synth heavy 80’s group).

I see that the Mod Sequence has the ability to kind of do what I want, but I can’t see a way to actually retrigger the envelope.

Or maybe there’s another way to achieve the affect.

Thanks in advance -
Pat

Hi again @patazzmusic ,

Can’t you simply use the Jup-8 V4’s Notes Sequencer? That can retrigger Envelopes. It can even be used together with the Mod Sequencer and other modulators.

Hey there @LBH

Hoping I don’t confuse things more…

Spent some time trying to dig into this… I guess I’m not finding what I want in the manual or on Youtube based on what you described.

Here’s an example
Bizarre Love Triangle Breakdown

Here’s a little more information that might help people understand why I’m trying to implement this.

  1. the band I’m playing with is nto going to use backing tracks or sequences in the background. I’ve been able to do some limited “sync’ing” with them (arpeggios, sync’d delays) without having to play to a click, but the

  2. I can’t see a way to use the note sequencer to trigger the envelope without defining the actual notes. MIDI being what it is, I’m assuming that’s because a note on should have a minimal (e.g., velocity > 0) to make this work.

  3. Up to this point, I’ve been somewhat OK playing back sections of audio (Kontakt playback), but it certainly is not ideal as
    a. It takes a long time actually load the audio (extending time between songs)
    b. NEVER syncs very well - even a couple beats per minute difference causes me to cringe at the rhytmic issues, which is exactly what I’m trying to avoid here.

Ideally I’d be able to:

  1. Hit the chords at the beginning of the bar
  2. Have the notes I play (re)triggered based on the sequencer (notes or Mod sequences)
  3. Be able to sync it be tempo tapping a pedal (already have this part figured out) when the rest of the band drifts

Perhaps I need to use a different synth that has more modular capabilites to do this (2600)V, but I’d like to keep the number of synths in the set that need to be loaded down.

Alright. I think I have something usable. Just had to dig in a bit deeper and adjust my conceptual approach as there were a few things I had wrong in understanding the Mod Sequencer.

Picture below is of the mod sequence with the changes I made.

Input the rhythm,
Assign it to the VCF (not the envelope)
Turn up the level to the cutoff
I needed to use both the rate and the mod multiplier to get the tempo and the articulation (shorter “stabs” - think of it like modulating with a square waveform, but need the mod sequencer to get the right rhythm).
Also using the Retrigger mode so that I can bring it back into sync at the start of a measure (sync issues happen - no matter who or how you try to avoid them).

If you for example have all notes in the center, then the notes/ keys you play will be played.
You also have the trigger option for each step.

OK. So the notes sequence uses a relative methodology for the sliders. I’ll try that when I get back to a keyboard (currently just on the laptop… ).

yes the notes in the note sequencer are relative to the played keys. C is the default base note.

In case you don’t know. You can play Arturias instruments in standalone mode with some letters on your computer keyboard.
Many vendors have this option.
In DAWs you can also use a computer keyboard.
