When I think of the MatrixBrute, it makes me think of Brutus from Popeye. So, I named this Randomizer program, MatrixWimp, for Wimpy the Hamburger Mooch. It’s also Wimpy because less than 80 parameters can be randomized (click on About inside the program). But, it is still an awesome and powerful tool. I have already randomized some next level sonic beauty (and weirdness)
Friends, I need some volunteers to test this out. It’s working fine for me on a windows 10 PC. (Mac OS to come) I have it zipped on my google drive.
Nice But I can’t download it, the link asks for login to google account. I’m quite sure its also possible to share from google drive without requiring a login.
Looks quite similar to mine (not so many ways to present this, I guess!), which was 99% finished this weekend - so I will post it very soon. It grew from being Matrixbrute specific to a generic randomizer with some extra functionality.
Yes, its quite disappointing that so few parameters are available, and f.ex the “type of effect” is missing because it’s a button, but the rest of the effect section are available. My Novation Mininova have 46 different parameter-sections with around 500 parameters - makes the GUI quite big!
Yeah, you’d need a google account to login and access this download zip file. After I get some feedback, I’ll put it somewhere easier to download. I am open to suggestions. I may post the code on github too. IDK… just wanted to get something out there ASAP.
I downloaded it after you removed the restrictions, and finally got to test it with MB today. Seems to work fine, both via USB directly to the MB, and via a USB Midi interface (iConnectivity mio10) and midi cables. I have only observed that the sound changes, and not inspected the midi CC messages sent to verify they are the correct CC’s for that section.
Hamburger is OK both as a file icon, and a icon in the app, and nothing suspicious discovered during my test. Pressing ALL changes parameters as fast as it can, no idea if any CC is dropped.
Thanks for this–I love a randomizer for exploration. Sometimes it can come up with some configurations one normally would not have considered.
So far, everything seems to be working as expected. I would like to request the text on the buttons be more contrasted against the color of the buttons, it’s a bit difficult for my old eyes to make it out.
Very cool project! Did you ever see the nord keyboards’ “mutate” function? It would do small random knob moves from a given sound, to roll the dice as far as improving it. You might have been able to control the amount of mutate.
I imagine a truly random patch generator would make lots of essentially inaudible sounds, I wonder if it is possible to weed those out by clever programming or if you need a soundcheck?
I have owned an M-Audio Venom and that has a randomiser feature. You could create patches based on selecting existing patches and it created a large variety based on the selection, which you could scroll thru and select those to save. Yes, it did produce some useless noise but it also produced some very interesting patches that I probably would never have produced otherwise.
I think randomisers are great when you are looking for inspiration as they offer a starting point for something novel.
That’s certainly one use for them.
On a couple of occasions now, i’ve not quite been happy with a sound, i think it might have been Pigments from memory, which has ‘dice’ not just for Global functions… i think i may have used it on the envelope type a couple of times and one of the distortions i the effects chain, and it came up with results i wasn’t quite expecting, but was very happy with.
I’m glad more manufacturers are starting to add them to various functions now, rather than just Globally.
