First time user trouble with recording

Hi, just got the Minilab3 and helping my grandson set it up. We’re having trouble getting the control buttons on the keyboard to work (the control button that light up when we press the Shift key). We want to record loops, and play along with them. Using the keyboard with Analog Lab V. Checked the manual and the FAQ but can’t seem to find explicit instructions. Any help is appreciated, and if there’s a good tutorial online, perhaps you can point me to it.
I also tried toggling the control from Arturia to DAW but don’t see a difference. Thanks.

Hi there,

You cannot record directly from the MiniLab 3 using only Analog Lab V, you’ll need to connect the controller to a DAW where you’ll be able to record loops and play along with them. If your grandson is just getting started, there are some free digital audio workstations available on the market, as well as free trials for many of the big names.
Here’s an example video of connecting/recording in a DAW using the MiniLab - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifLiBUAAQ5Q

I hope this helps!

Thanks for that, will check out the video, I installed Abelton since they gave us an activation code. I guess what confused me is, one of the first tutorials I watched on the Arturia website pointed to the fact that the transport controls were “available” in both Arturia and DAW mode. Perhaps I misunderstood, but that’s why I didn’t think you needed a DAW to record loops.

Ah, that’s great!
For sure, I can understand the confusion. In DAW mode the MiniLab can remotely control the functions of Ableton (for example), so that’s your record, loop, stop, play, etc. The other Analog Lab mode enables the control of the Arturia software parameters. There’s a more detailed breakdown from pages 24-26 of the user manual - https://dl.arturia.net/products/minilab-3/manual/minilab-3_Manual_1_0_5_EN.pdf

Thanks for the explanation, that clarifies it for sure !
