[Feature Request]: Use rotary knob as MIDI CC controller

Hello,

The KeyStep mk2 has pitch bend + mod strips and a sustain/expression jack. That’s for MIDI CCs 1, 64, and 11. Occasionally I find myself wanting to be able to control a different CC.
Therefore I’d like to suggest a function in the firmware to use the rotary knob as a configurable MIDI CC input. The infinite knob is moving in discrete ticks but this should not deter the player from using it to modulate some CC.

Usage:

  1. In MCC, configure the MIDI CC number to be modulated by the knob CC function (any CC from 0-119), or disable.
  2. KeyStep mk2: Simply rotate the knob to send CC values (no wrap-around); no need to go to settings.
  3. The display does NOT show the current CC value as the knob is moved; it operates as usual.
  4. When pressing the knob it navigates the global settings as usual, and CC value transmission is suspended until settings are exited.

It might be difficult to show current CC values while the display is used for other operations such as SEQ or ARP. So the easiest way is to not show current values at all – the player has to listen to what the CC does. Of course the devs are welcome to find a place to display the current value … maybe a simple 1px horizontal line at the bottom to indicate values 0-127 ?

Ok you might say, why not buy an expression controller such as the Plus 3 and map it by means of Logic Pro environment or MIDI effect to the desired CC? This might work but not everyone uses the KeyStep with a DAW, and the expression controller is an additional purchase.

I’m probably not the first to think of more useable CCs with the KeyStep. One could think of remapping the mod strip or aftertouch but then you’d lose the mod CC. With my suggestion from above you’d have 1 additional CC. The knob is just so inviting …

HI @biochill and thanks for the suggestion… One can never have too many knobs and sliders attached to CCs!
