Hi everyone.
In the new version 2.0.0, long-pressing the main control brings up a new menu providing access to various functions, including a sound editing menu. It’s impressive. This access allows you to edit up to 20 basic parameters for each sound.
The issue—or rather, the suggestion for improvement—is that the sound editing menu should be the first option. Currently, the “Like” option comes first; to reach the editing function, you have to turn the controller and then press it again. In my opinion, this menu should be the first one so that those parameters are more easily accessible whenever you need to modify them.
Regards.
I agree Andres!
This Preset menu (accessed either by a long-press or Shift + short-press on the main data dial) has always been there with the other options (Like, Save, Add to Playlist, Delete, MIDI and Info). Only the Sound Edit option is new.
This is only true the first time you access the Preset menu after power-up.
Once you have moved the Preset menu cursor from “Like” to “Sound Edit”, “Sound Edit” will be the first option next time you enter the Preset menu, until the next power-cycle.
In the same way, if you move the cursor to “MIDI” or to “Add to Playlist”, then the cursor will be in the same place the next time you enter the Preset menu. This way, you can repeat the same operation for several presets, like adding multiple presets in a row to a Playlist.
Would you prefer the cursor to always go back to “Sound Edit”?
You are right; the menu that appears after a long press already existed—the new feature is the entry that allows access to parameter editing.
It is also true that the last selected option is retained, though not after the Astrolab is turned off. I am currently organizing my preset library, moving presets between Analog Lab and the Astrolab and deleting some that were already on the device. When I switch from Astrolab presets to Analog Lab presets, the focus is lost: the “Save” option appears, and then the device “forgets” the previously used menu option, reverting to the “Like” option.
My suggestion was to place the edit option first so that you would always start there, while still retaining the last selected option as it does now. In any case, this is just a suggestion based on my own workflow with the Astrolab; other users might prefer the current setup.
Another thing I’ve noticed about the new sound settings menu is that, unlike the other menus, moving the rotary knob or pressing the up and down arrows doesn’t allow you to wrap around from the end to the beginning or vice versa. In Astrolab’s other menus, reaching the last line takes you directly to the first, and moving from the first takes you to the last—it’s cyclical. The new menu doesn’t work that way. I don’t know if this is intentional or if that feature was simply overlooked.
All interesting suggestions. I have only had the chance to use the new version for one session, but I think they took my suggestion to heart and did a similar change in the Settings menu. I like to use my auxiliary foot switch to control Rotary Fast/Slow, which is a menu choice. However, that choice would be lost after it was powered off, so each time I used the instrument, I had to remember to reset it from its default, which was Next Patch, or some similar name.
After the update, I went to set it to my preferred setting, and it was already there. I’m hoping this is a part of the upgrade.
