Envelope retrigger on Note-offs

Hi! I was reading this SOS article: Priorities & Triggers
and I wanted to emulate this behavior that it explains at the end (quoted below), because I find it could be very musical. But the thing is I can’t do it because the envelopes retrigger on note-offs, so the low note that it mentions is re-articulated. Is there a way to change this? Thanks!

Here’s the behavior i’d want to try:

Blockquote
“Using a multi-triggering, highest-note-priority synth, hold a low note (say, a bottom C)” … “Then play a solo using your right hand. If you play legato higher up the scale, the synth will perform conventionally and each note will be articulated correctly. But if you cease playing, the pitch will drop almost instantaneously to the bottom C and, if the VCF and VCA sustains are greater than zero, continue to produce this note until you start playing again.” … “You can develop this technique still further. Consider this: when you let the pitch drop to bottom C, you have not pressed a key (you have only released one) so — on most synths — the low note will not be articulated. This can be an expressive and subtle performance feature.”

Perhaps the Legato options are you want you want to try?

Yes! I’ve tried all modes. Both Legatos doesn’t retrigger envelopes at newly played notes. Non legato retriggers at note-offs :frowning: That’s why i’ve asked in the other post about All Env Reset hoping it would do something like i wanted.

I’m seeing the same thing. I have Polyphony set to Mono, and Timbrality set to Single, and all the Legato options act the same way - it seems to always act like Legato Glide is set. Envelopes are not retriggered for any legato notes and glide always occurs.

I don’t know if this is a bug, or if this is meant to apply to a different configuration than we have set up?

Hi all,

I don’t have a Polybrute.

Reading in Polybrute (6) manual:
12.2.2.4. ALL Env Reset
• With Reset: Off, the envelope will start the Attack phase from its current amplitude when a voice is retriggered.
• With Reset: On, the envelope returns to 0 and plays the entire Attack phase when a voice is retriggered.

If i understand correct, then i would try this:
*Set All Env Reset to OFF.
Use Mono mode - Priority Higher
*Use Legato On or Legato Glide if you want Glide.

Then only the first note played should trigger envelopes until all notes are released and a new first note will be played.
The legato played notes should follow the ALL Env Reset: Off like described above. It will not retrigger but can perhaps sound like it depending on the current amplitude level and the sounds Envelope settings.

If the Envelope retrigger and play the full Envelope from a zero amplitude doing this, then i suggest to contact Arturia support.

Just my two cents.

Ok, I FA’d and FO some more in Polyphony:Unison and Polyphony:Mono.

When you use envelopes:
Legato On (or Legato Glide) means the ENV does not get reapplied to each new legato note.
Legato Off means the ENV does get reapplied to each new legato note.

This always happens to the VCF ENV. The “ALL Env Reset” setting seems to control whether this also applies to VCA ENV.

When you use Glide:
Legato notes always apply glide.
Legato On (or Legato Off) means non-legato notes will apply glide from the last played note.
Legato Glide means non-legato notes will NOT apply glide from the last played note (more like “Legato Glide only”)

(If I designed this, for clarity I would split this into two different setting groupings: Legato ENV On/Off and Legato Glide Only On/Off.)

Ok, that’s new info, great! The thing anyway is that the behaviour I want would all be “legato” because I’m always holding down with my left hand a low key (low C for example) and then play with my right hand over that in unison/mono. I want right hand notes to retrigger the env, so as to they are well articulated by the VCA and the VCF.
When I stop playing in my right, the low C rings again, but when I lift the last right hand key the Env Resets while returning to the low C, like triggering that key again. I’d want it (as I have not played the key again, just held it down) to keep at sustain level (so it’s not articulated). I dunno if it’s possible, and by default it retriggers the envs again.

I think you want to get into Timbrality:Split mode then. You can then set the Polyphony and Legato options individually for the Upper and Lower zones.

The lower zone will play Morph sound A and the upper zone will play Morph sound B.

EDIT: No wait, that’s not right. You still want to keep the entire range Mono, but not have the Envelope reset for the low note only. I don’t think that’s possible with any available configuration.

It sound like you want the upper notes to retrigger envelopes when you play legato style, but at the same time not have the low note to retrigger envelopes, when you play legato style.

This is not possible unless you manually can shift behavior for legato style playing when needed.

The fact you will hold down the low note will mean that you in mono play mode will play all notes legato style except the first note you play.
