Hi, I recently bought the Keylab 61 Mk3 (not the essential version) and I connected it via its USB cable to a Hub 3.0 on my desk which is also connected to a Hub 3.0, both self-powered. Now my question is this, everything works perfectly but I read that the manual advises against connecting the keyboard via a Hub. Why? Can I continue to use it in this way?
Hey @Dragoda
There’s an old maxim here in The UK which goes ‘If it ain’t broke… don’t fix it’.
I do know there CAN be issues using hubs, and your setup sounds like it POSSIBLY should be problematic. IF it’s working properly, as intended; then it would be a good idea to leave it as it is, you appear to be one of the lucky ones.
Arturia tell you to avoid using hubs mainly because they can be problematic. But there are a ton of variables. If it’s working for you, then fine. Just leave it. I’ve been using a powered hub for years, powering two midi controllers and an audio interface. But IMO it’s still wise advice.
I’ve been on this forum and its predecessor for about ten years. There have been tons of threads with people complaining their keylab isn’t working properly, then 23 replies in they’d suddenly drop us this little nugget of information that they had it connected via a hub. Plug it into their computer and boom their problems went away.
If I was Arturia I’d give people exactly the same advice. They aren’t alone. Most manufacturers of higher-current USB-powered devices like audio interfaces and midi controllers advise you plug them straight into the computer, and for the exact same reason.
More than anything else, the only thing that worries me is the possibility of physically damaging the device at the power level. If, on the other hand, the only thing I can run into is a compatibility problem that can be solved by connecting it directly to the PC, then I leave everything as it is.
Ok, Arturia supporto,respond me:
"Thank you for reaching out, I’ll be glad to assist you!
Indeed we do recommend connecting the controllers directly to the computer in order to prevent any potential connectivity issues.
However, if you are using these USB hubs and the controller is properly recognized and working fine, then you can keep using it this way.
I would recommend ensuring the USB hub provides enough power to your Keylab Mk3 or using a Power Supply Unit"
