[Bug] Analog Lab is causing Ableton Live to crash

Hi there!

When I create playlists, Ableton Live crashes very frequently.

This happens when I try to assign a preset to a playlist by right-clicking on the preset and then selecting a playlist. As soon as I select the playlist, Ableton crashes immediately (not always, but very often).

I’m using macOS Sonoma and the latest version of Ableton Live.

Best regards,
Markus

Hi @markussaure and welcome to The Sound Explorers Forum!

Many thanks for your post, it does sound like it could be a bug, so i’ve slightly tweaked your title, so the Arturia Devs will be more likely to see it.

HTH!

Hi @markussaure. Welcome to the community from me too.

I don’t use Ableton Live. It does’nt look like i have any issues. But it can be related to Ableton Live. Perhaps on your OS.

You say it’s only sometimes you have the issue. How many presets do you have in the Playlists and in songs? There are limits, so can this be a reason for your issue?

May i ask why you create Playlists with certain instruments? You have much more options in filtering, sorting and searching presets using the Explore view. And you can like and tag presets. You also can create user banks.
Do you use midi ProgramChange?

Hi!
Thanks a lot for your reply.

My longest playlist has 36 entries, the shortest has 8.
I switch the playlists via Bank Change and the presets via Program Change. I created a custom interface in TouchOSC with buttons labeled with the playlist names (“Bass”, “Keys”, etc.).

I switch the presets within a playlist using the buttons on an old Novation Circuit. There, I always have 32 buttons assigned to my favorite sounds from the selected category, and with one additional button I can access another set of 32 sounds from that same category.
And I use the 8 macros with the 8 controls of the Circuit.

I used AKAI VIP for a very long time for a similar workflow. That software was even better suited for it, because you could create snapshots of previously selected filter settings and switch between them via MIDI. The great thing was that I could integrate all my VST plugins there and wasn’t limited to a single provider (like with Analog Lab). Unfortunately, the software hasn’t been developed further for a long time, and I uninstalled it because it doesn’t support VST3 plugins.

After a very long and intensive search, Analog Lab seemed to be the only alternative that supports my long-established workflow.

One of the reasons I use Analog Lab is also its filter functions — but those can’t be controlled via MIDI. I mainly use them to fill my playlists with my favorite sounds.

The problem with the crashes has been occurring for quite a while now and across different versions of Ableton.
The crashes don’t seem to be related to the number of presets per list; this also happens when filling a small playlist.

Hello! could you give us the following details:

  • what OS or PC are you on? what version?
  • is this happening in standalone or in a DAW?
  • do you have any MIDI devices active or connected to your Analog Lab when this crash happens?

Thanks

actually the simplest would be for you to send us your crashlog directly, either here, or to the support team (create a zendesk ticket)

thanks!

Yes using ProgramChange is a reason to use Playlists.

It does’nt look like it’s about the number of presets in playlists i agree.

I have no further ideas at this point.

Thank you for your feedback.

I have a system crash log. Are there also crash logs generated by Analog Lab? Or are there any other logs that might be helpful?
Should I copy the entire system log here, or can I attach it somehow?

Here are my details again:

  • OS Sonoma and the latest version of Ableton Live (so I’m using Analog Lab within Ableton Live…)
    Connected MIDI controllers:

ICON i-keyboard X
Novation Launchkontrol XL (MK1)
Novation Circuit (MK1)
OXI ONE (MK2)

Best regards,
Markus

Not here, but please send your details and system crash log to the support team via a zendesk ticket
