A year ago, I was here with you discussing what was desirable for KeyLab Mk3 and later some of us (me included) were pretty much disappointed by the actual device.
One of the features we talked about was polyphonic aftertouch. I did not think that I would like it very much knowing how hard it was to control channel aftertouch on my M-Audio Oxygen pro.
I waited some more time hoping for Novation and a new 61SL Mk4. But no joy! What was I waiting for? A midi controller with Midi 2.0, light guide, Pads, faders and knobs and of course a big LCD screen. Polyphonic aftertouch was not really high on my list. But why not?
One day I realized, being a learnt organ player I would always want a set-up with two midi controllers. And that changed my view on things completely. I would keep my M-Audio, with Pads & Faders and I would buy a NI Kontrol S61 MK3 which provides all the modern features I was missing till now.
I got my Kontrol S61 for 2 months now. First, I couldn’t do much with polyphonic aftertouch because VST plugins with it seem to be rare. It is ridiculous, that there are only a few Kontact libraries supporting PA. Not even Massive X handles it. NI? Really?
So, I started searching, whose plugins support PA. Arturias Pigments does it and its implementation ist astonishingly easy. In UVI Falcon it is a little challenging as you have to get to the right level in the signal tree to implement PA. But if you do, it creates a kind of music magic that makes you play for hours just because it is so great.
Aftertouch with a Fatar Keybed is uncomparable to what I knew from my M-Audio keyboard. You do not need to be a master artist to use it.
Of course, there are more VSTs supporting PA. I really like it in Rolands Zenology. Korg’s wavestate native supports it as well. But I wasn’t able to modulate something with it as you need a rocket science degree to program this synth.
Anyway, I like my new midi controller. And I am happy about all its features. But I never would have thought, how much an impact PA would have on the amount of fun playing it.
It is a pity that Arturia did not implement it in its Keylab MK3 series.
