Audio Levels to Studio Monitors Low with TRS

Dear Team,

I purchased an Arturia MiniFuse 2 last week, and initially, I was using the headphone output to connect my studio monitors (Edifier MR4) via the AUX input on the speakers. This setup worked well, with normal audio levels.

However, when I switched to using a balanced TRS cable for the connection, I noticed that the audio levels through the TRS output are significantly lower compared to the headphone output to the speakers. I’ve tried swapping cables (both balanced and unbalanced TRS) but the issue persists.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance or troubleshooting tips to resolve this.

I would suggest this is absolutely normal.

The level of the headphone output and the output via the TRS are both approximately the same at circa +12dBU but have different impedance characteristics: 94Ω on the TRS and 10Ω on the headphones. This is entirely because the headphone output needs to present an impedance suited to driving passive headphones, whereas the TRS outputs are optimised for driving the powered inputs of active speakers.

Download an SPL meter for your phone. If you can achieve a level of approx 75dB at your seated position when playing contemporary commercial mastered music, then your speakers are perfectly loud enough.

As @Jon_Vincent rapidly beat me to saying… yes this is completely normal behaviour you’re describing here.

‘Studio’ gear generally has MUCH more headroom built into it than ‘consumer’ or ‘end user’ audio kit as we’re dealing with MUCH more dynamic range than broadcast or commercially recorded music/audio, which will be subjected to limiting for various reasons.
