Can the Astrolab be used as a basic midi controller? And can it communicate midi out data via USB to computer?

As a basic MIDI controller, yes, AstroLab can send MIDI over USB.
It sends on the selected “Keyboard channel”: notes + aftertouch, pitch/mod wheels, sustain and expresion pedals, as well as data from the 8 macros/fx encoders.
It can also send its Arpeggiator / Looper and Chord/Scale data (or not, depending on the MIDI Output Filter settings).
