Arturia VST3's including ALP are crashing Ableton after update this morning

I was playing with ALP in Ableton (11 Suite) and I saw a few Sound Banks I thought I would download and try. While downloading these I opened the Arturia Software Center app and ALP, Modular V3, and Pigments all had updates which I installed. After the soundbanks all downloaded and the updates were complete I tried opening them in Ableton but ALP gives me an error message and both Pigments and MV3 outright crash Ableton. The VST3 files are where they are supposed to be. Other VST3 like Kontakt 7, Zebra etc open fine. Nothing seems out of the ordinary with Ableton Preferences. Any troubleshooting advice most welcome!

Hi @fpssdave and welcome to The Sound Explorers Forum!

I’m guessing you’re on Windows as you’re using VST3 versions?

Have you tried to un/reinstall them yet? That’s often the first thing to do with issues such as this.

Please try that and let us know the outcome.

Ps,
Please make sure to subscribe to The Arturia Newsletter to be the first to know about the latest from Arturia.

Indeed I am @matjones and indeed that is the advice from Arturia support.
Unfortunately after doing so the result is the same.

HI @fpssdave

Did you just uninstall them from ASC or The Windows Control Panel?

There are also some files that can get left over from this, such as user presets/samples etc…?

If you haven’t already, try uninstalling, back up any user presets etc you might want to keep by moving/copying them to a different location and then delete C:\ProgramData\Arturia and C:\ProgramData\ArturiaSC.
Then restart your system and reinstall, i’d just install ASC and maybe one or two instrument from it to save a bit of time.
Let us know how you get on with that if you haven’t tried it already.

HTH!

Hi @fpssdave. Also welcome to the community from me.

Ableton Live’s error message say some plugins are disabled.

I don’t use Live, but can’t you enable them? Perhaps rescan the plugins? If the plugins suddenly is on a blacklist in Live, then get them out of that.
Be sure you not somehow have Arturias software installed more than once.

I suggest you try the above.

I also suggest you ask in a Ableton forum about the error message, if it does’nt help.

Good luck.

I followed Tech Supports instructions explicitly - twice now with the same results:
Thank you for reaching out, and sorry for the inconvenience, in order to rule out any issue please follow the below workaround:

" * Please perform a clean uninstall of your softwares (Analog Lab, Modular and Pigments)

[IMPORTANT: If you have created user Banks/Presets, first please back them up using the Export Bank/Preset function of the stand alone version]

To do this, do as follows:

  • First go to: C:\ProgramData\Arturia

If you have not enabled the display of hidden folders please go to your file explorer → display → check “show hidden folders” to access it.

Alternatively, you can directly copy/paste the path provided above in your file browser address bar to access it as well.

Delete the concerned product folder

  • Then, please go to this folder:

C:\Program Files\Arturia<concerned product>

And simply click on the uninstaller"

The first time I re-installed using links they provided. The second time I installed via ASC.

Hello LBH and thanks for the welcome

The error message is rather generic but is referring only to ALP when I try to open it. Everything else appears normal and I have rescanned to no effect. I know nothing about a blacklist and I don’t believe one can install the software more than once without changing the destination files, which I have not. I do not yet believe this is an Ableton issue due to the way it occurred and Ableton appears to be working normally otherwise. Kontakt and all it’s associated VST’s are fine. Abyss, VCV Rack, 4 Korg synth emulators, Space Craft, Zebra… all fine.
I do appreciate your trying to help though!

Did you keep holding down ALT key on you computere keyboard while rescanning to force a rescan of blacklisted/ blocked plugins?

Be sure VST3 is ON/ enabled in Live.

I have only heard you having this issue yet. If you are the only one having this issue, then it’s a mystery, if it is about the plugin. Not saying it can’t be about the plugin at all.

Any other Ableton Live users here, who have this issue, and can’t get it solved by using the suggestions in this thread?

All my other VST3 and VST plugins are working fine, and this occurred right after I did the update with ASC.

Hi again @fpssdave,

As we have talked about in another topic in the forum, then you have no issues like this using another Ableton Live.

Too me this mostly indicate the issue is related to the Ableton Live you have the issue in.

The plugin clearly work. So at first sight it’s not about the plugin. As said i have also not seen others having this issue.

I suggest you try what’s suggested in this thread, starting with using ALT while rescanning. Here is some informations why to try that, if you have’nt already:

Somethings strange things happens, and then it have to be checked in a troubleshooting.

Beside what’s already been suggested in this thread, then i can also suggest you read this:

I can also suggest you contact Ableton Live support. Be sure to tell them, that it does work in another Ableton Live you have.

It is very annoying having issues like this, and when things does’nt work. I know.

Hello LBH

My flight home was cancelled due to a snow storm so we are stuck away for a day or two. I will try some of your tips when I return. I do still think it’s something that occurred with ASC as I was using ALP in Ableton that morning when I noticed a few Sound Banks I thought I’d like to try. When I opened ASC it said that ALP, MV3 and Pigments all had updates. After the updates is when the trouble started and only with these 3 programs. Nonetheless I will open a ticket with Ableton as well.
And again I do appreciate your trying to help.

If it’s an install error, then a reinstall should help. But perhaps try to uninstall the instruments first this time. Then restart the computer and install again.
Did you reinstall ASC? If not then that’s also a stone to turn.
You can also download the individual installers from Arturias website and install with them, just in case. Sometimes that can make a difference.
I can’t rule out anything 100%.

Have a good journey home.

EDIT: BTW: Don’t run Arturia products while you install/ update. I believe the applications will be or ask to be closed, if you do. EDIT END

Just tried Pigments (I don’t have Analogue Lab) in Ableton Live 12.1.1, and both VST3 and VST2 work fine.

I also tried a second Matrix 12 filter on the ‘Up in the Clouds’ preset, which sent the CPU usage indicated in Pigments up to 35% (CPU is AMD 5900X) and no crashes happened.

My machine has Windows 11 23H2, up to date. Perhaps consider rolling back to 23H2 if your machine has 24H2, which seems to have some issues at the moment.

Fixed

I uninstalled and re-installed Ableton to no effect, same issues. Annoyingly, different VST versions and plug-in creators have their default “save to” locations in numerous possible files: Common Files, Steinberg, Windows VST etc. I also have made attempt to consolidate these over the years into two custom files. Today I did some house keeping and resaved all my VSTs to a new set of custom folders, set my preferences in Ableton to these and did a rescan and all is good. I thought I might then be able to go and delete some of the previous VST file locations but when I tried it said that a file was in use - but whatever.

Thanks for the help LBH and others who took the time to chime in.

Glad to hear you are home and safe @fpssdave.

It’s good if the issue is fixed. Hopefully by installing things on the new paths in use. Thanks for letting us know.

I think the only thing that’s certain is something must have been mixed up somehow on your computer. It is important to be careful and thoughtful when installing.

I hope all is well now.

Cheers
