I have he 16 Rig in a rack with a couple of synths, and I am wondering how you guys work w/ the USB out + MIDI to control multiple things? Do you have a hub that gives you more outs, or something else?
Hey @submute
I think for most people that would be using a device such as this will be using them with desktop machines, which generally have multiple USB ports, my own machine has around 14, after i installed another two USB2 ports using the header on the motherboard, as well as 4 USB3.2 ports via a PCIe card.
I use a mix of USB and ‘DIN’ midi these days, gravitating more toward USB though as it’s become much more reliable in general these days.
I DON’T have a 16Rig though, my interface IS USB3 though and needs to be on its own, dedicated USB3.1 port.
I used to use a MOTO Midi Express 128, but don’t really have the need for it these days so have retired it. I used it in a ‘star’ system with each synth having its own midi port so there was never any buffer clog issues.
I understand the 16 Rig has its own onboard USB hub, could you use that for one device and the Midi ports for the other? Or you could just chain them, if they both have DIN midi, on different Midi channels.
Unless it’s ABSOLUTELY essential, i wouldn’t connect an audio interface via a USB hub to a computer though as it can cause all kinds of issues, as we often see in posts on this forum.
HTH!
I have a Mac Studio, which has a bunch of USB-C ports, one of which is used to connect the 16rig.
Since most synths require a USB A<->B connection, I have a 7-port hub connected to another of the USB-C ports to give me a bunch of USB-A ports to connect other synths and stuff to. I also have another 4-port USB-A hub connected to the back of the 16rig for more ports to connect synths.
My digital piano connects to the Mac using Bluetooth MIDI, which is a bit of a pain because I have to go into the MacOS MIDI Studio to re-establish the connection every time I turn it on. I could get longer MIDI DIN cables and connect that to the 16rig if I wanted to avoid that hassle.
