Pimped my MxB
« on: February 08, 2019, 06:40:41 pm »
Hi
 IV PIMPED MY MxB

Knobs arrived after only 4 days   very impressed

Knobs have a nice soft but firm rubber feel to them
unlike the original hard plastic

some of the original knobs were a pain to get of almost broke a nail  lol

the new knobs fit nice and tight
the colours are nice and vibrant

now for the bits I don't like

the original knobs white line marker strip goes down the side of the knob then juts out
on to the knob skirt making it easy to see what setting the knob is at

on the new knobs its just a straight white strip  there is hardly and skirt at all
so therefore depending what angle your looking at the knobs from it can be hard to see the knob setting

The fader tips will have to go back as they are almost twice the size of the original fader tips
no chance of trying to fit them   ( bummer )

I have left the fader tips in the picture for reference

All in all   I am happy with the look and feel
apart from the couple of niggles I mentioned earlier

the idea behind my colours for the knobs
is  Pink for all oscillators
Red for any knob that increases the volume or input and output
orange for the Steiner filter  apart from output  Red
green for ladder filter  apart from output  Red

I know I'm going to get slaughtered for my colour choice    LOL

cheers

Very cool!  :D

A colour coded knob config is kinda' tempting... perhaps one day. In the mean time, yours serves as an inspiration!

I am toying with the idea to somehow "colorize" the stock MB knobs. I am thinking some kind of sticky overlay for the top of the knob. Not easy to do because of the white position-marker ridge.
I remember (from my days of working in research labs) that we used color coded stickers to ID the top of eppendorf tubes. But I think these would not be sticky enough and would come off too easily with heavy tweaking. Applying acrylic paint seems a bit extreme...and would probably result in flaking over time (not good for electronics).I'll let you guys know if I find a good option.

Here's a first go at my "concept", using standard Avery color-coding sticker dots (1/4"). The dots stick well...when they don't overlap the white marker ridge.
I tried sticking the dot off-center, below the marker: it sticks very well...but doesn't look good. Next option: punching out the top of the dot to clear the ridge (as seen in the ladder filter cutoff pot).
Again, good stick...but not ideal looking. If I could find a small rectangular punch (2mm), that would look better. Oh well...too much time on my hands, I guess...
At the very least, it's a quick way to test color schemes, if I ever decide to purchase color knobs. BTW, no need to add color to all the knobs, imho, but only to contrast sections. I am thinking light grey for the audio mod section.

Very sleek looking.  I like the contrast of colored dots and white marker.  They remind me of those knobs that have interchangeable colored caps.

the sticker solution: update

I am now using cryogenic labels by GA International (lab tag.com). These are meant to be used to label microtubes for storing in liquid nitrogen (-196C!). They stick very well indeed.
Several nice color options, including white ones that can be coloured with permanent markers, offering unlimited color possibilities. This time I went for a more extended labelling.
For the lower row of 8 modulation knobs, I chose a "half-moon" cut that makes them stand out. I realize there are infinite possibilities for grouping/contrasting/etc. Now back to actually playing the beast!

The green/orange for the filter controls work really well ! Nice idea  ;)
