FLS (Fiber Local Storage) limitations in Windows
« on: May 12, 2018, 06:57:24 pm »
There are an increasing amount of us windows users that are running into the limitiations of FLS 'slots' when using plugins from multiple vendors causing plugins not to load.

There is an interesting thread over on the Steinberg forum.... https://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=250&t=134715

Most of us affected are fully aware that this is down to a limitation of the windows OS and of course people are pressing MS to address this issue BUT Some vendors are 'hungrier' than others when it comes to using FLS slots and i'm sure it must be possible to 'economise' on the coding to some extent on plugin vendors part?....

The best performing appear to be Waves, once waveshell is opened then only 2 slots are used no matter how many other Waves plugins are loaded, Slate VMR is the same in this respect too so WELL DONE to those companies!

It seems from my own testing and from other people that the 'worst offenders' are UAD2 plugins, iZotope and Dear old Arturia!

Here is a list of plugins i picked at random and the amount of FLS slots they require....

UAD2
BX20 - 4
ATR102 - 4
DBX160 - 2
SSL E Legacy - 4
API 2500 - 4
EMT 140/250 - 4
Fairchild 670 MKII - 4
LA-2A Grey - 4
----------------------------------------------
Slate VMR - 2
----------------------------------------------
Korg ARP Odyssey - 3
Steinberg Padshop - 1
Waves Codex - 2
Steinberg Dark Planet - 3
Spectrasonics trilian - 1
FXpansion BFD3 - 2
---------------------------------------------

And now Arturia..... some of these are SCARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1973 Pre - 8
TridA - 8
V76 - 8

Analogue Lab3 45!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ARP 2600 v3 - 6
Buchla - 6
CMI - 8
DX7 - 6
Synclavier - 7
Modular V3 - 7
------------------------------------------------

The OBVIOUS questions here are WHY are Arturia plugins so heavy on FLS usage and PLEASE can something be done to lower it?

I would post more results but am currently beta testing Spark, which IIRC only has an FLS count of 1! as well as working on current material too.

There ARE possible workarounds like Bidule and JBridge but JBridge is purely for VST2 ( i do not know enough about Bidule to comment).

I never thought i'd be likely to get hit by this problem as i don't use huge orchestral templates, just mainly pop/funk/jazz and some downtempo stuff too, but if i want to use say the 1973 on drums, the V76 on vocals and the TridA onl guitars then that's TWENTY FOUR FLS slots gone!

PLEASE can we have more 'economical' versions?

BTW i LOVE the new Preamps, they sound fantastic!!! no complaints there, and the V6.1 collection certainly seems to be the most stable version yet so again a BIG pat on the back for Arturia there too.....

Hi matjones,
Thanks for pointing this. We must investigate on that point to improve our consumption.
I suppose that AL3 use a lot of FLS because it loads ALL our engines at the same time.
.......testing.......

Hi Ben and thanks for the honest reply..... much appreciated!

Yes it would be GREAT if the consumption issue could be improved.... that makes sense with Analogue Lab/3 if all the modules are loaded simultaneously for convenience sake.

Really hope we can get on top of this as i enjoy using Arturia plugins and am especially enjoying the new preamps.... I ran a guide vocal which was recorded on an NT2A and an old, less than stellar interface though the V76 and it completely transformed it! It added loads of vibe and would have been useable if the performance had been better.... was quite shocked at the improvement it made though  8)

Perhaps this can be of interest:

https://juce.com/discover/made-with-juce - Arturia is among the users.

Does or will Arturia use dynamic linking?

I can add that this also have been discussed in Presonus Studio One forum.

Old thread, but figured you'd all be interested.

In the current Windows 10 Insider preview build, we've increased the slots from the Vista-era 128 to over 4000. If all goes well, this new cap will be in the Windows 10 19H1 release in the first half of this year.

Official announcement:
