BeatStep Pro Sync with PO-12
« on: June 01, 2015, 09:04:52 am »
Thinking about getting a BeatStep pro. But I'm wondering if it cant be synced up with the Teenage Engineering PO-12 for drums. Like, would I be able to use the pads on the BeatStep Pro to play the sounds of the PO-12? I absolutely love how the PO-12 sounds, and it would be amazing to be able to control it with the BeatStep Pro; please reply if you have any idea on this!
Thanks so much.

P.S. the PO-12 uses a 1/8th inch click track for syncing.

Here's a link for the Pocket Operators, including the PO-12

It should work BUT :
- i didn't find witch kind of clock the device is waiting for.
The beatstep pro will be compatible with
24 ppqn
48 ppqn
1 pulse per step
.......testing.......

Would it go in the Drum Gates? Or the Clock ports?

Clock sync out of the BeatStepPro into the clock sync in of your PO 12.
The clock sync out of the BeatStep pro will send clock to the slaved device.
There is several clock protocol and the BeatStepPro is able to send :
24 ppqn
48 ppqn
1 pulse per step
In order to be sure that the PO12 will works with the BeatStepPro you need to know what kind of clock the PO 12 is waiting for.
But the connector will be a simple 3.5 (1/8th inch) TRS jack.
.......testing.......

Hi,

Been messing with the PO12 and the Beatstep Pro this afternoon...

If you set the PO12 to SY2 it seems to run twice as fast when the BS Pro clock out is set to '1 Step'.

So, I had to set the BS Pro to 65BPM to get a PO12 tempo of 130BPM.

Forget 24 and 48pq... The PO12 runs at ridiculous speed and just sounds a mess...

Looks like we need a 1/2 step option?

Regards,
Neil.

I got the same problem and I use the Drumgate-Output 8 & 7 for clocking the PO-12 and the PO-14!
But it will be great to have this with the Clock-Outputs!  ;D

As the previous poster notes clocking the PO-12 from drum triggers works just fine, program a drum pattern with every other step set (if in 16th notes). The PO-12 needs to be reset by stopping/starting the play mode in order for the BSP and PO-12 to start at the same place.

You may need a oplab to sync correctly to the Teenage Engineering products.  The Pocket Operators run on a 2ppqn clock input, weirdly enough.  (https://teenageengineering.com/guides/oplab "mode 5: ...... CV1: pocket operator sync. 2 pulses per quarter note. connect to TE pocket operators (PO-12, PO-14 etc) in sync input mode.")
The oplab is actually a very interesting box and worth buying even if you don't own TE instruments.

Hi everyone,

same problem for me : none of the clock options in Midi Control Center works to sync those cute Pocket Operators.
I guess a "simple" firmware update could bring us a quick and simple solution.
I would greatly appreciate this implementation. I'll post a more visible topic as a feature request! :)

see you!

Well it seems this beatstep pro is better on paper than in real life! I have terrible problems with it and my monotribe. Impossible to synch either...

Arturia say they are working hard to fix this.  Let's hope the Keystep means more progress on the BSP firmware.  They must share some code somewhere in relating to midi and dinsync.

Hi Ben,

maybe Korg's iOS App "SyncKontrol" could help studying the question of the integration of this setup in MIDI Control Center.
It's a syncing app for Volcas (which also works for Pocket Operators).

Hope you're still planning to include this in the next firmware. :)

The must problem is that we don't really know how the clock of the PO12 works ... Anyone to have this information ?

2ppq.  To clock your PO from a BSP, you will need to dedicate a drum gate to it and have it sending a gate every second step.

OR

You can clock PO's to midi using a Volca sync out as they also run on 2ppq (assuming you clock your Volca from your BSP midi).  The Volca sends a constant clock pulse, so you will have to count in your PO start.

Lol, there's still people trying to sync this toy with other gear? Hard time isn't it? ;D
