Mystery potentiometer socket?

I noticed an image of the Minibrute's interface circuit board had some unpopulated sections above the pitch and mod wheel cutouts on the left side. It looks like a couple of pads for resistors, but what really caught my eye was the outline for a potentiometer and its pins.

I'm curious what this originally did, and whether or not it could be activated. ;)  While I'm not a modder or circuit bender, leaving usable access points on the circuit boards (ala Korg MonoTribe) can ignite some interesting third party products.
