How do I use performance controls with the KeyStep 37?
« on: April 26, 2022, 09:37:02 pm »
Two questions.

Question 1: Control pitch.

When playing solos, I often need a smooth and continuous pressure-sensitive vibrato control. On older synths like the Juno-106, this is available as a bender joystick. I would like something like that section of the synth, where pushing the joystick (against firm resistance) forward lets you time spots with vibrato. This is done by assigning only DCO to the joystick. Ideally I would like to also set the tempo/time of the vibrato.

Here's a picture of the performance section of the synth:

On my KeyStep 37, the corresponding control would be the Mod control. It would be nice if Mod was separate from vibrato.

Can I
a. Reassign the Mod or Pitch control to vibrato amount?
b. Reassign aftertouch to vibrato amount?
c. Connect a controller similar to the section pictured, and have it control the pitch e.g. by repeated pitch bends rather than Mod amount?

Question 2: Control Amplitude
Can I connect a MIDI Breath Controller and pass Volume CC and similar through the KeyStep to USB MIDI?

Here's a picture of a MIDI breath controller:

I would like the performance controls to come from the Master Keyboard with the key presses etc.
If not the KeyStep, will another product let me do these two things?
