Function triggered by midi notes
« on: February 22, 2020, 10:43:35 pm »
Hello,

Quick question/comment/concern here.

Is there a way to have the Functions run only when there is a midi note on my main DAW timeline?

As a simple example for this post:

In Ableton, I have a 4 bar clip on my main Arrangement timeline. I have a midi note on counts 1, 2, 3. Nothing on count 4.

When I use a Function it continues to run even on measure 4 where there is no midi note.

Other synths typically will allow for a way to stop the function from running when there is no longer a midi note. Is something missing in Pigments in this area? Or am I overlooking something?

I've tried LFO [One, Loop, Run] to no avail.

Thank you for reading.

Hi and welcome to Arturia forums.

If you mean you use the Function in LFO Mode, the you shall set the Play Mode to One.
But what is your Gate Source?
Is the Rate set so the function play to long time?
Is your notes longer than 1 count including the release time - and what is that count?
Check the above, then my guess is, that you find the solution. It can be done.

Hello, thanks for the welcome and the reply.

Yes, I'd like to use it in LFO mode.

Gate source is Poly Keyboard
Rate is set to 1/4 note
The release for the ENV VCA is 0

Since the midi note is only 3 counts long, with no release, and the rate set to 1/4, I presumed it would run 3 times (on each quarter note where there is a midi note present) and then not run after that as there is no midi data for it to run on and no release. However, that's not what's happening. It runs on the 4th count as well which isn't what I'm used to seeing.

I don't think I want to use the LFO mode in "One" because that will only run once.

I can think of a couple workarounds, but I am wondering if there is a feature that should be here that isn't or maybe a bug. My thoughts are that this should be possible as well. But I could be missing something, as a newer Pigments user.

Let me know if this helps or if you need any other info.

Thanks!

Hey LBH,

Just an FYI, I'm on the latest beta version of Ableton with Pigments V2. I restarted Ableton and all seems to be working as intended with Pigments now. So it could have been Ableton related.

Thanks again for the reply.
