Title: Xpander presets in Marix-12V ?
Post by: Ingo Weidner on December 07, 2014, 12:34:05 pm
Hi,

at KVR i was asked if besides the Matrix 12 factory patches also a bank with the Xpander factory pathches are included. Those patches seem to be different.
So far i did not really find those with teh current version of Matrix-12V.

There seems to be a GUI screenshot at the official Matrix-12V website that shows a list of the banks which also includes a XPander factory bank whcih does not seem to be included with the official release.

I found the patches lists for both the Matrix 12 and Xpander in the first text files here:
http://www.tcapp.com/pub/synths/oberheim_heaven/xpander/SynthcomXpanderPatches/

I was also asked if Matrix-12V could import Sysex files but i don't see such feature in the plugin. So far Sysex import only semed to be available with Arturia Prophet V (for both Prophet 5 and VS).

There is an editor which could be maybe used to manually transfer patches from Sysex fies to the plugin (i don't have that editor yet so could not check myself):

I still have my Oberheim Xpander. Sysex import like Prophet V would be cool!
But also with Sysex import option, we should not expect that the hardware and software sounds the same.

And how do you find the authenticity, DBS?

I owned a Xpander too (sold it in 2004). From what I remember, the sound is pretty accurate, but I think it lacks some 'oomph' in the bottom end register, from F2-C1, and in that particular region of the keyboard, I think I can definiately hear that the filter and oscillator is digital

When i first checked the demo i missed some low end too but after adding a Saturation FX (free Klanhelm IVGI) and a nice EQ (PSP NobleQ) Matrix-12V sound great for me. I posted a screenshot of that setup here:

Currently working on patches for matrix 12V and will post some audio demos soon (with using those additional FXs).

Arturia did a good job. Some sounds are really hard to distinguish … between hard and software.

But there are limits. You can not expect to get a perfect match if parameters are equal. You will also have more and more differences if you use more and more modulations. Then it is very hard to match sounds on both.

Also the multimode filter sounds different if you use phase filter etc. and if you use extreme parameter settings.

It also depends on how picky you are. ;)
