Title: Firmware Update
Post by: Dav1d on April 03, 2014, 10:09:15 am
After the unit is unplugged/replugged, are all left-hand LED turned on (to indicate firmware upgrade mode)? If not there is a rescue mechanism to force firmware upgrade mode: power up while holding both Start and Stop buttons.
on Mac, we rely on device name to locate device in upgrade mode, and this name could have been changed (exceptionally) by Audio MIDI Setup
place device in firmware upgrade mode
        start "Audio MIDI Setup"
Insure MIDI window is visible (menu "Window->Show MIDI Window")
locate BeatStep, it could be either "Arturia BeatStep" or "BeatStep Updater"
        unplug BeatStep
delete corresponding item from Audio MIDI Setup window
try again update procedure as usual

hi Dav1d,
this procedure solved the communication issue between Midi Control Center and BeatStep under OSX 10.9.2, the device was listed as connected but MCC couldn't open the device. Now it is working, thank you  :)

Hi Dav1d,
I attempted to do this procedure (for Mac, OSX 10.9.2).
my "Audio MIDI Setup" see the beatstep, but it is just called "Device MIDI/USB" (not  "Arturia BeatStep" nor "BeatStep Updater").

I removed the device. Then I repeated the procedure but MCC failed to open the device (both the firmware upgrade and the syncronisation).

any suggestion?   :)

many thanks,

mmm, if you rename it : "Arturia BeatStep"... Let me know

YES!

I succeeded! I had problem with USB socket,...here the my procedure:

(for my MacBook Pro (OSX 10.9.2) one USB socket did not recognize the BS and names in the "Audio MIDI Setup" the device as "Device MIDI/USB". The other one works fine (for me) and 'see' the BS device as "Beatstep Updater").

-plug the BS (holding START/STOP buttons).
-open MCC and "Audio MIDI Setup":
1) go to MCC and click button for Firmware Revision. MCC asks to locate firmware file, then it asks for unplug.
2) unplug the BS.
3) go to "Audio MIDI Setup" and remove the device named "Beatstep Updater"
4) go back to MCC, plug the BS (holding START/STOP buttons).
5) it works and you can sync.

thanks Dav1d.

just realize that I should do this everytime I connect the BS.  :(
it seems "Audio MIDI Setup" and MCC conflict... (cannot hear sound when MCC is syncronised, while when AMS works I can hear sound but I cannot control the device with MCC)

strange

Hey all!  I just purchased the BeatStep yesterday and I'm having the exact same issues as described above.  The midi control center recognizes that the beatstep is connected, but it will not allow me to sync or update the firmware.  I have followed the steps listed by Dav1d above about 10 times now and it still is not working.  I'm running Mac OSX and have the usb connected directly into my computer.  This is incredibly frustrating considering that I have to have the midi control center to use the unit.  If I can't get this resolved today I'm probably going to return it.  Hugely frustrating...I've been waiting for this ever since NAMM and now I finally have one and it doesn't work!

@JStorbeck: it doesn't work with any USB-port?

I agree with you, it is frustrating. I succeed to update, but I have to do this everytime  I plug it. :-(

Title: Re: Firmware Update
Post by: JStorbeck on May 08, 2014, 09:55:23 pm
Instead of making music with it, my first experience out of the box was trying to just get the damn thing to work with my MacBook!  I spent 2 hours just trying to get it to sync and none of the recommended fixes did jack...wtf arturia.  >:( ??? :'(

@theotrst I tried switching ports as you had suggested earlier before my first post and it still had no effect. My macbook is 2 months old running mavricks OS, I use a focusrite interface, run ableton, and logic pro X, never had a problem like this with any of my other USB connected gear.

@JStorbeck

The only thing I know is that I had you same problem (with OSX 10.9.2 / Mavericks). I succeeded checking the Audio MIDI Setup and removing the BS before plugging it: in this case, MCC could recognize the BS.

good luck!

David's directions worked great for me.  I had to go into apples native "Audio MIDI Setup" and rename the generic device to "Arturia Beatstep" but once I did, his directions worked perfectly.

what changes does the firmware update [BeatStep-v1.0.1.4] actually make?

a list with the issues solved an features added will be nice... every brand always do this.

i hope arturia engineers can handle the features need it to be able to use this device without a laptop, there is syncing issues  use it as master, and no way to use it as a slave with out a laptop.

Downloaded firmware, still same situation as described by Jstorebeck. Every time i try to sync I receive message: Failed to Open Device.

In terms of functionality this means in Ableton, computer can take input from Beatstep, but no midi sync, In other words no tempo sync. I really would like to resolve this.

Excellent new features in the recent firmware. Everything working smoothly for me using Ableton Live 9 as my DAW and CV/Gate control of the Microbrute. Using it on Windows 7 Ultimate and Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9.3).

Love this product!  ;D ;D

This is getting a little embarrassing Arturia...
Title: Re: Firmware Update
Post by: insula on June 20, 2014, 08:50:19 pm
just disappointing....

Arturia should be a SW company, but you release a really well done HW synths and a new controller, with a limited but well made HW... beatstep.

this new controller (with a lot of bugs if is not used with out a laptop) receive a lot of feedback with lacks and bugs... sounds pretty close to HW products... releasing a products and use clients as beta testers.

after a new release that should resolve a lots of bugs, miss some importants bugs if somebody wants to used as master with a modular system.

- gate output doesn't work ...somebody can confirm this?

 - no way to used as slave with out a computer... ok fine, lets used as master midi clock generator, :( i can not change the patter division... midi clock start to do weird things.

 - Slave feature, if the SW already use UART PIO for midi communication,  why no offer a CV click input disabling MIDI out functionality using the same  micro PIO port as a input... and now you can slave by SW the beatSteap with a modular system... sound a bad ass cheap controller

one half of the coin -> saturated controller market.
other half of the coin ->  first modular system controller, cheap and "usable" as Arturia solve and improve the firmware

so how a SW company made a nice HW but have so many SW issues?

Nope.  :(
And it still doesn't recall the global channel when pressing recall+pattern on the hardware.

I finally got it to change the midi channel  with  CHAN + PAD  but only when im using it in my daw  Cubase

I still cant get it to change the midi channel if I use it with a stand alone vst  such as mini v

also in stand alone use. You can only control 1 synth at a time
it needs a special multi use driver. Its such a pain to have to close mini v to be able to use MMC  then close that and reload mini v .

Hi kevin, please make sure the standalone program i.e. mini v is set to the midi channel you want and not all midi . also when you change patch in the mini v it will change the midi channel back to all . so check this before using beatstep.

Title: Re: Firmware Update
Post by: turbo_kev on June 21, 2014, 11:58:22 pm
Hi Terry

yep tried that and still no joy

but at least I now know that changing a patch also changes the midi channel

BTW  I notice when I change the mdi channel on mini v  it puts a little star next to the patch name ?

and I am right in thinking that you have to stop using mini v to be able to use MCC
and that you can only use 1 synth at a time in stand alone mode.  this is a right pain in the backside
I was having a read up  and found out you need a special driver of some sort to share the midi data ?

I shouldn't moan coz everything works just great in Cubase
but sometimes you just get the urge to load up a couple of stand alone synths and play

BUt defo  I cant change the midi channel  and cant use more than 1 synth or MCC without turning one of them of first

cheers

Terry

I just tried analog lab  stand alone and that works fine.  so I tried a couple of other synths from the v collection
and so far the only one that don't work is mini v   perhaps its a bug, I will try the rest in the collection and report back

cheers

I just updated my firmware and now Ableton Live won't detect it, it seems. I can see the BeatStep on the MIDI tab on Preferences, but it won't show up in the dropdown for midi inputs on the tracks. Did something change regarding configuration using DAWs?

EDIT: Ok, now it seems Live will only detect it if I don't have MIDI Control Center opened... But if I don't open the MCC before opening Live, I can't sync. Is it normal that you can't open both at the same time?

In Windows it is normal, yes. (OSX: no idea)

But it shouldn't! Arturia should make a multi-client driver!  >:(

I have no idea how to do it in your DAW, since you don't mention which one you're using. And maybe you should make a topic about it - because it has nothing to do with a firmware update.  ;)

I've plug in my Beatstep to my late 2013 macbook pro and Audio Midi Setup Does not recognize it. But when I plug it into my old macbook pro 2010 it comes up just fine and I am able to use MCC 1.1.0 and updated my Beatstep. But when I go back to my new mac I get the same problem.

So my guess is ether Mac or Arturia has a problem with the other when using usb 3.0

*Update after I restarted my computer everything seems to work perfect.
Title: Firmware Update FIXED(?)
Post by: Funtmaster on July 23, 2014, 10:32:36 pm
I have fixed it (for me at least).

I was mystified as to why the MCC stated no Firmware version at all. So after trying all the suggestions in this thread, I downloaded the previous Firmware version and installed that successfully and then upgraded to the latest version. In my case, it seems it needed an earlier version installed first and recognised BEFORE it could do the upgrade. Makes some kind of sense to me.......

I hope it works for others.

Post by: robbneu on August 01, 2014, 11:59:37 pm
Wow... what a disappointment.  Like everyone else in this thread, I can't get the MIDIControlCenter app to either sync with or update my Beatstep.

A couple of points that are probably worth pointing out:
- I'm running a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 Mac Mini with OS 10.9.4 and 4 GBs of RAM
- The MCC app seems to recognize that the device is plugged in, because the Memories slots, Sync, and Firmware Revision buttons all "light up" when it is plugged in.
- I've gone through multiple attempts to get this firmware upgraded, including rebooting my computer, trying alternate ports, unplugging any other Midi gear I have that is plugged in and might be interfering, etc.  I've followed all or most of the steps outlined elsewhere in this thread and other threads linked from here.

When I unplug and plug the Beatstep in, it does not go into upgrade mode automatically.  It runs through it's usual "pads light up in sequence" light show and then all the lights go dark except for the Cntrl/Seq button, which lights red.

When I force firmware upgrade mode by holding both the stop and start buttons it skips the pad lighting sequence and all the buttons on the left EXCEPT for the stop button, light up (White = Play, Red = Cntrl/Seq and Store, Blue = Ext Sync, Recall, Shift, and Chan... Stop is not lit).

In Apple's Audio MIDI Setup app (Utilities) the Beatstep does not show up automatically.  If I click "Add Device" I get a generic "new external device" that doesn't seem to be tied to the Beatstep in any way.  When I click "Test Setup" I get a tone when I press the pads on the BS, but I get the same text tones when I press keys on another device that isn't listed in my window as well.

Those of you who have updated Firmware via another computer... does it allow you to sync on your computer that wasn't recognizing your Beatstep once it has been updated?

Sorry for the rambling post.  I wanted to provide as much information as I could.  Any help or resources anyone can provide would be appreciated.  I feel like once I can get this thing going, I'll be really happy with it.

Hi rob, I will try to help if i can , but first you need to check a few things.
Do you have the latest midi control  centre ,it should be 1.1.0 (check the about pane) see screenshots.(not firmware number)
next plug in beatstep to the usb then check to see if its showing up in the mac ok .go to top left corner and about mac /then more info/then system report /and find usb tab on the right you should see beatstep in the tree .see screenshot.
next go to audio midi set up and check to see the beast step is in the midi setup. most people miss it as its off the screen so when the windows open scroll to the right and you will see it .see screen shot.
if all is well download the latest firmware below. 1.1.0.0.
and try this press the firmware revision button click upgrade find the firmware file then unplug beatstep . plug it in again and press ok.

let me know if this helps at all. i know you may have done all of these steps.

Thanks for the quick response, Terry!  It's appreciated, especially considering it's the weekend.  I apologize for not getting back sooner, but I was at a conference all day.

And, yes, I'm using version 1.1.0 of MCC.

I did try all of the steps you mentioned, but the tip about scrolling around in Midi Studio is terrific!  I don't know how I missed that before, but sure enough, I scrolled to the right and the Beatstep showed up.  It does not show up as it is listed in your screenshot, however, as it shows up as "USB Midi Device" instead.

I've seen a couple of posts that suggest that the name might be a part of the problem, so I followed the steps shared by theotrst in Reply #4 of this thread, but that didn't work either.  The Beatstep, after having it's named changed and then ultimately removing it, did show up as "Beatstep Updater," but I'm still not having any luck with the Firmware upgrade.  I'm still getting "Failed to open the device." whenever I try to sync or upgrade.

I don't have another modern computer at home to try this, but I could probably upgrade with my Windows PC at work.  If I get the firmware upgraded, can I expect sync to work on my Mac, even though I can't get it to work now?  Does the firmware upgrade fix this issue?

Thanks again!

Robb

This is a major disappointment and has been since I bought a BeatStep in April.  I have never gotten it to work.

I am using the latest MIDI Control Center (1.1.0)
BeatStep shows up in the system report
I've created an entry for the BeatStep in AudioMIDI setup

MIDI Control Center recognizes the presence of the BeatStep, but will not update the firmware.  I have tried multiple times.

Could you please supply complete instructions about how to fix this.  I've been living with a useless BeatStep for four months now.

So, I updated the firmware on the Beatstep to the latest version, using my work computer, and... my Mac at home still doesn't sync to the Beatstep.  I'm still getting the "Failed to open the device" error, despite the upgraded firmware.

It has to be the MCC software.  If I can connect, sync, and upgrade properly on Windows there's something broken with the Mac OS version.

Has anyone here who has run into these issues managed to try any other Arturia devices?  I've had my eye on Spark, but I don't want to waste even more money on a device that refuses to work for me.

Spark LE at least worked fine for me on a Mac. Beatstep would work 15% of the time, after many restarts, plugging and unplugging, and opening and closing windows, renaming devices. Ultimately I am incredibly disappointed in the woefully inefficient support for this thing, and sold it just a couple of days ago. Lost $40. Whoo. Cheaper learning experience than some, but... it honestly has cast Arturia in a very, very negative light for me. I will likely not purchase future products, which is kind of a shame.

- Transpose via MIDI
- Transpose up/down octave
- Switch sequence via MIDI
- Better knob acceleration

I don't have any issues with MCC, and I use the BeatStep regularly on Mac OSX 10.9.4 and Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Ableton Live 9 on both platforms.

My issues:

1. Gate/CV into MicroBrute: Transpose isn't applied until the sequence is started - makes it effectively useless. When, with the sequence stopped, I use a rotary encoder to select a note, I expect that note in the sequence, not a note that's several semitones up/down!
2. MIDI note data from sequences arriving late in Ableton Live. I have tried *everything* to correct this.

These problems have been reported on the forum by multiple users.
Title: Re: Firmware Update
Post by: frp on August 30, 2014, 07:42:03 pm
Yup, the same problem here, only it is with Windows7. The Control Center finds the BS, but won't sync or update. When syncing, I get the message "Failed to open the device. Please verify the device is not in use by another application." When updating the firmware, I get "Could not get firmware revision." But if I click on the UPGRADE button and try to load the LED file,  I then get the message "Firmware update error,  Please verify the device is not in use by another application."

Trying the plug/unplug hold down the START/STOP buttons doesn't change anything. Since I have been jamming with this for a while with my synth, is it possible that I have hit a key combination that screws up communications w/Control Center? Sequencing the synth works fine.

Does anyone know of conflicts with Windows programs?

I can't believe the Beatstep doesn't have drum machine functionality - that's the main reason I bought it!

You guys should really put that on the next release. Just have a third mode on the function key - Drum Machine mode - and when that is on, the pads turn another color - red, green, whatever - and then pressing shift + any pad in that mode picks the pad to be placed in the sequence. You already have everything else there. If people could use Beatstep as a dedicated drum machine for drum racks in Ableton - that thing would sell like crazy(er).

Have spent several hours trying to get Beatstep to work on my Mac. Supposedly the Yosemite 10.10 update is an issue?
There is no communication between the software (MidiControlCenter) and hardware (the pads).
Tried the procedure described above (Macs Audio MIDI setup) deleting, unplugging, etc. It worked the first time, but next day the problem was back and the 'procedure' failed to improve the situation.
It's a shame, the pads are really nice. I simply want to use it as an instrument, so why does it have to be so complicated, guys?

Because they release half arsed products that don't work properly and crap all over their customers, its company policy.

1. Better communication with MCC in OSX 10.9 and above .
2. Triplet values !!! ....what is a groove without 1/8 T ?
3. Note Tie   ( use shift/seq and purple led  maybe ?
4 . Up to 32 or 64 steps per pattern .

Crucial, basic stuff:

Nice to have

And finally:
For there to really be more firmware updates! With basic functionality fixed first, before more esoteric requests. The gate/swing/legato fix was awesome.

Are we ever likely to see a firmware update for the BeatStep? I'm disappointed with Arturia's lack of support for this and other (namely Microbrute and Spark 2) products.

Spreading themselves too thin - too many products released in too short a time IMHO.

Their support for this so-called "groundbreaking" new audio interface will have to be better than this, otherwise it's doomed to failure.

  • Transpose needs to work in paused mode in sequencer while programming. Useless for live use now.
  • No restart of sequencer pattern when changing loop length and/or time division, also useless for live use now.

/Lfvberg

Fully agree Lfvberg - transpose not working when the sequencer is paused is a massive issue, even in the studio.

So how about it Arturia ? Can we squeeze a little bit more out of this ? The no triplet thing has bummed me out since I got it ... That at the least would allow it to still be useful running next to the Pro for me .

No word ? Any hope for updates or is this now a dead product ?

Have had same problems as other members in syncing with MCC. Thanks for the tips David, a combination of your instructions and rebooting my Mac do get it to work. Once I unplug however or shut down MCC the same problem occurs. Is there any procedure that can ensure a constant connection or do I have to follow this process every time I want to use the MCC? In the meantime have saved as much as I can to the Beatstep but still not ideal.

So Arturia have officially abandoned this product ? ...and the customers who believed in their product ?

This is priceless. I mean Arturia itself is a wicked company producing high quality controllers that doesn't work out of the box.

I guess its YOUR FAULT (the world) cause how come they could release something that (globally) doesn't work.

As it is not my first product from Arturia I am aware of faults and non responsive support well who are you people to demand updates, software costs for pete sake.

I decided to go to my local store and get this controller just to find out whether there is a bunch of unlucky people here or something is not right stating that I am reserving the right to return it WITHOUT GIVING THE REASON within a week. I can return it anyways just don't want to apologize for being a time waster or for Arturia's "quality" workmanship.

Imagine what a surprise. Knobs works but no acceleration settings seems not responsive well I have a solution:
turn down the tempo to 50BPM and that way you have plenty of time to keep twisting the cutoff knob from 0 to 127 or just spread the raise across 48 bars CLUB likes it that way.

PAD 10 is less responsive than others - solution:
1- ask younger brother or sister/son daughter to whack it with a stick or a little hammer for you
2- head bang it
3-do not use, why would you want to use it anyway its not like essential or something

Pads producing double hits randomly - solution
Stop moaning about it its like extra feature to glitch up your drums and its ABSOLUTELY FREE!!

To be fair in this little review kudos for the unit i'm testing as it does tempo change, pitch, and sync with my other synth via 5 pin din and CV does work with my other Arturia product Microbrute << this one is quite ok for the price. Also I must say I like the feel of sturdiness and and pretty lights flashing pleasant blue light, slightly smudged by tears of disappointment as I speak.

As a conclusion: I will definitely not wait for "soon to be released firmware" for 2 reasons
1- it will not be anytime soon and
2-it will most likely not fix double hits I doubt it.
3-because they just don't care.

Hahahaha, nice review Vangassen!

To be fair, all of the pads on my beatstep are responsive, and I don't see any double hits, so perhaps you got a unit with dodgy hardware.

Software-wise, it's a mess.

So I suppose there will be no more firmware updates for the "Basic" Beatstep...  :'(
Or do anybody know anything to the contrary? I only want some bugfixes, no new functionality is needed. But the state of the machine is making it a fun toy only, which can't be used to play live.
Sad, really.

I think we've been abandoned. I should have returned this thing a year ago when I had the chance. A sequencer with dodgy sync is useless. I fell for the promise of "firmware updates are coming". I won't make that mistake again.

Yeah, very disappointed that Arturia didn't actually get this product to work. At the very least, a trade-in offer for a BeatStep Pro would have been nice.

And, now, they release a 2000 synth, when it seems their software team can't even get a 100 step sequencer to work properly.

Hey guys, so I just ordered the beatstep black edition, and thought I'd search this forum, and came across all these really negative comments about a supposedly "unusable" piece of equipment for live use...None of you have come back to this thread after I see there's been a february 2016 firmware update. Is this because you are all too busy being happy with the unit now? Or did you just disabandon it all together? If so, what did you replace it with, that supposedly works better..? I would be able to ship it back and get the minilab for the same price, and might do that if it turns out I also find the beatstep "unusable" which I doubt though...So please share your updated info and opinion, I think the public and Arturia deserves to know the truth.

Hi David.  Thanks for re-posting those old notes re not being able to sync and upgrade firmware.  But none of that is working for me.  Ive been at it for 2 hours this morning rebooted many times, completely unplugged everything, tried different cables.  In fact, things are going backward now my MacBook doesnt even see Beatstep as a midi device.  Ive just rebooted and plugged in again nothing.  MCC seems to see BS, but cant upgrade like in the earlier posts.

I know Im a couple of years late, but Id still like to get this working. Can you help?

Never mind the last Im embarrassed to say I had BS connected to MacBook via midi, not directly from the D/C In jack into USB port (instead of drawing on laptop for power, Id plugged into a powered USB hub).  Plugged BS directly into laptop now, and all is good!

Welcome to Arturia. They dont fix bugs. Ive been waiting for a fix for the timing issue since the day it came out. Years later it still doesnt work. They havent fixed Spark, they havent fixed Beatstep, they abandon their users. Its pretty standard Arturia behavior.
