Title: Just bought an Origin --- having grief with MIDI --- suspect Origin is damaged
Post by: dhjdhj on July 05, 2009, 05:24:49 am
After powering up a brand new Origin, I found I couldn't get it to respond to my MIDI controller. I was able to verify that Origin was receiving MIDI data by connecting the Origin MIDI THRU output to a MIDI monitor utility. I noted that the DEMO programs worked fine, by the way, and I could edit the filter (say) while a demo was playing and could hear the change so the Origin was not completely dead.

A couple of times, after powering up, the screen did not appear to light up although it looked like it was displaying some data.

I also observed that when I connected my Mac to the Origin via USB and ran that Connector program (I forget what it's called), it kept claiming that it couldn't find an Origin.

The plot thickens.....after a few power-cycle attempts, all of which did not get MIDI working, I powered it down yet again, waited a few seconds and powered it up again. It would not boot, the screen went bright white and all the RED button lights lit up --- it just stayed that way. I then tried once more....this time, it powered up perfectly and MIDI worked as well.

I left it powered on the rest of the day so I could play with it. I've no idea whether it will work again tomorrow. My concern however is that this particular Origin is flawed/broken somehow and I'm wondering if I should just return it anyway and get another one?

According to the system settings, this Origin has 1.0.7 firmware which, I understand, is the latest version.

By the way, when it was working, it sounded damned good!

This definitely need deeper investigation.
Please get back to your vendor and ask for an exchange. The unit shall be sent back to our facility for inspection and repair.

ok --- I noticed from the other thread that there were a few issues with earlier Origins. When I talk to my vendor (Sam Ash in New York City), I'd like to make sure they don't give me an "older" one by mistake. As of what serial number do I know I'm safe?

More information --- when I powered on the Origin this morning, MIDI did seem to work.

However, it would not (and still will not) respond to CC 1  (i.e, the modulation wheel controller).

I noticed that there is a little red light in the LCD display that flashes to reflect  incoming MIDI data and that light does NOT flash when I rotate my modulation wheel. Again, I am able to observe through the use of a MIDI monitor tool connected to the THRU of the Origin that the CC messages (including CC 1) are indeed being passed through the Origin, yet it doesn't respond.

I also noted that after "futzing" with my MIDI controller to try and make the Origin respond, after a while, the Origin just stopped responding complete to MIDI. Powering off/on fixed this but clearly this is unacceptable behavior  (imagine having this happen at a live gig)

Now, the real question is, is this particular Origin just broken in some strange way or are all Origin's failing like this?
