Title: Audio Hardware Fault?

Something wierd happened when contecting microfreak xlr out to kontakt & usb midi mac laptop, sound interface went dead.  Microfreak now emits loud hiss, crackle & ear splitting audible whine on both mini jack & xlr out.  Does this
also standalone.  None of controls or settings make any difference except polyphonic (makes distortion noise louder)  and filter (slightly alters noise).  Any ideas what should i do?  Firmware update?  Or is it likely hardware fault?
