Title: Tuning issue: Every Voice has a different tuning
Post by: yanbak on November 24, 2021, 07:52:45 am
Hi.
Every time I hit a note the tuning of the two VCO isn't identical. Sometimes they sound unison, sometimes they sound detuned. I have written to Techsupport, but they either don't seem to understand me - I am not a native speaker, so totally possible - or seem to imply that this is normal behaivior. Of course i tuned the devie many, many times, and let it get warm beforehand.
Here is a soundclound link if anybody wants to listen an tell me if this ist normal behaivior or not....thx in advance

I can't tell you whether the variation you're experiencing is within the normal specification for the PB, but it is similar to what I experience on my own PB. It's an analog synth, and this kind of variation between the voices is common. Yours might be a little worse than mine though. I have one voice in particular that is usually 14 cents off from the others, but the others are within about 6 cents most of the time.

Thanks for your reply.
Shouldn't that sort of things be "fixable" by a firmware update?
Tuning is a bit of a gamble because sometimes the results are "ok", and sometimes the result is unplayable, which tells me that maybe just the tuning algorythm isn't always doing what it is suppose to do.

When I first got my PB I did an 'All' tuning calibration after feeling it was off, even after some hours warming up.

Still felt voices were a bit too much off, so made just a 'voice' calibration, or what it is called.
Then it was alright and has been since.

Mentioned to Arturia, and they meant that tuning might have to be made several times.

But experimented a bit with 'Pitch accuracy' to compare. The Off, linear, exponential and wild setting.
But the Off setting works best so far for me.

For a bit I thought it should be called 'Pitch deviation', since Wild is really Wild Off, not Wild Accurate.
I thought of it backwards.

I listened to a comparison on YT that Starsky Carr did over DeepMind and Prophet 6 I think it was.
Even P6 got this Vintage setting in a knob in a firmware update, first introduced in some other synth.
Suddenly you could not hear a difference between P6 and DM. DM became as phat sounding as P6.

And the settings that DeepMind is really nice, it made all the difference that voices and parameters for envelopes and such can be set to deviation as well as rate of deviation, and voices and parameters are separate. Something to look at maybe for PB too.

I also listened to a YT by Tim Shoebridge, over Moog One that did some hysterical calibration that voices became all sterile. So you can go too far in making accurate too. VCO sound like DCO.

It's a delicate matter this tuning thing. PB offers incredible amount of unique settings for each preset but maybe a few more over tuning could be useful. How they deviate the 'Pitch accuracy' maybe should have for calibration as well, that you decide to go harder on basic tuning if voices deviate a bit too much on the unit you have.
