Cannot update Origin with new firmware
« on: January 31, 2010, 05:10:28 am »
Today I decided to update the Origin with the new firmware and failed miserably with exactly the same results using both a Macintosh and a Windows system.

In both cases, I connected my computer via USB, no hub involved and ran the Origin Connect software. The first thing it tried to do was sync the Origin and the progress indicator moved smoothly up to 7% and then got stuck there for a long time after which point the program indicated "No Origin found".   The Origin itself was displaying a message (I forget exactly) indicating that it was under control of an external computer, etc...so clearly some interconncetion happened.

My Macintosh is running 10.6.2 and my PC is running Windows 7.

How can I get the new firmware installed?

Hi,

we have upgraded several Origins with PC (Win Xp) and Mac here. We also used different Macs like MacBook Pro with 10.6.2 and iMac with 10.5.8, all with no problem.

There have been several releases of the Origin Connection software, so you should make sure, that you always use the latest one. The current one is included in the download file of firmware version 1.1.59.

As mentioned earlier, best is to connect Origin directly to your USB port, although I just recently upgraded my Origin using an unpowered USB hub.

If Origin should get stuck while upgrading and something gets really messed up in the firmware, chances are, that you have to contact Arturia through customer support.

Cheers

I'm glad it worked for you but I don't know what to infer from that. Obviously, if it didn't work for anyone, Arturia couldn't released it!

As I said, I cannot even get the Origin to be fully recognized by my machines, never mind any attempt to upgrade the firmware. And as I mentioned, it IS connected directly to laptops, no hubs involved.

By the way, after the Mac app has finished trying to connect to the Origin, it ultimately crashes. Here's the main thread stack trace

Hi,

I just wanted to give you some feedback that it usually works with the configuration you use.
Maybe you should contact Arturia support directly.

Cheers

Understood --- I did already contact Arturia but they probably won't respond over the weekend so I hoped that others might have run into the same problem.

Cheers,

Just in case double check that no device is sending midi to your Origin. It can be a keyboard sending active sensing for instance, or a MIDI clock. There must not be any MIDI mesages sent to Origin while the update is running.

If I've understood correctly you've already tried to restart the update? So yes, the best thing to do is to open a case with the support. To save some time you could prepare a zip of the update logs on the computer with which you first tried without success an update. These logs can be found there:

    PC running XP:
        C:\Documents and Settings\ <user_name> \Application Data\Origin  Connection

    PC running Vista:
      C:\Users\ <user_name>\AppData\Roaming\Origin Connection

   Mac:
       /Users/<user_name>/Library/Origin Connection

Make a zip of the whole above mentioned "Origin Connection" folder and attach them to a post to the support. In your post mention that the archive is for me.

I haven't even gotten as far as attempting an update....I just tried to run the "connector" which apparently automatically tries to "sync" the Origin. That sync process is failing at the point when the progress indicator reaches 7%

I did unplug the MIDI IN cable from the Origin during these experiments.

From looking at the logs, the following extract would appear to be significant:

Hello dhjdhj,
Did you install the latest version of Origin Connection (the one given with Origin 1.1.59 firmware)?
It is the first thing to do.

Let me know if it solve the problem.

All the best,
Kevin

Well, that's an interesting question. First of all, I had downloaded 1.1.54 a few weeks ago and was not aware that it had already been updated. I installed that connector and it failed to sync with the Origina as I have previously described.

When I downloaded 1.1.59, I tried to install that connector and it reported that the one already on my system was newer. So I did NOT remove the one that was installed with 1.1.54 on the assumption that they were probably identical but the test for version was just slightly flawed.

Is it really the case that the version with 1.1.59 is actually newer? If so, I'll certainly delete the "older" version and try again (although I'm skeptical that this will make a difference)

As far as I remember, I had this message too when I tried to install the Origin Connection software which is included in 1.1.59.
I could install this new version on my Mac after I deleted the old version including it's .plist file.

Hope this helps

I'm sure I could too --- but I assumed it wasn't actually a new version so didn't bother to do that.
I do however wonder whether removing the plist might help, I had forgotten about that part. Perhaps there's some funky preference that's screwing things up.

Well, I was using -App Zapper- on the Mac but it seemed that it did not remove everything. So after deleting the file com.arturia.origin.application.plist, I could install the latest version.

Cheers

I had a similar issue with my updater.  The disc that came with the unit wouldn't work.  I found out while poking at the elements that got installed on my Vista PC that it had blocked a couple of things (what the heck??), so maybe that was the issue.

Using the updater install that comes with the update worked flawlessly though, so I'd suggest using the latest updater if you guys have problems.
One day, I want my keyboard studio to be a synth museum like Hans Zimmer's
